"High Ground" is set in the 1930s in Northern Australia and is inspired by true events. Directed by Stephen Johnson, the film tells the story of Gutjuk, a young Aboriginal man orphaned in childhood who is recruited by a former soldier to track down the most dangerous outlaw in the territory — his uncle. Together they embark on a manhunt, which unravels a secret that ultimately pits them against each other.

Playtime Acquires Australian Action Film ‘High Ground’ with Simon Baker (EXCLUSIVE)

Playtime has boarded “High Ground,” an Australian action film headlined by Simon Baker, Callan Mulvey and Jack Thompson.

Directed by Stephen Johnson, “High Ground” tells the story of Gutjuk, a young Aboriginal man orphaned in childhood who is recruited by a former soldier to track down the most dangerous outlaw in the territory — his uncle. Chris Anastassiades (“Yolgnu Boy”) wrote the script.

“High Ground” just started shooting in the world heritage-listed Kakadu Park and Arnhem Land in Australia’s rugged Northern Territory.

The cast is completed by Aaron Pedersen, Caren Pistorius, Ryan Corr and newcomer Jacob Jr. Nayinggul who plays the role of Gutjuk.

Maggie Miles, Witiyana Marika and Johnson are producing the film along with David Jowsey and Greer Simpkin.

Playtime has acquired international sales rights to “High Ground” and is kicking off pre-sales at the American Film Market.

“We have been following Australian directors and writers for some time now, and I must say that Stephen Johnson’s vision in ‘High Ground’ is one of the most original stories that we have come across in recent years,” said Playtime’s co-founder Sebastien Beffa, adding that the film is “a truly international project that will resonate with audiences around the world.”

Johnson said he has wanted to tell this story for a long time and has the ambition to “create an exciting action-packed (film) for a wide audience that is both entertaining and confronting.” The helmer said he collaborated with Mandawuy Yunupingu, Witiyana Marika, Jonathan Nadji, Alfred Nayinggul and many families across Arnhem Land to craft the story.

“It’s a privilege to be filming ‘High Ground’ on sacred country with traditional owners and their families in Kakadu and Arnhem Land. Our mix of stellar and breakthrough cast brings an exciting potency to this epic story,” said Miles.

The film is a High Ground Pictures production. It’s financially backed by Screen Australia with support from Maxo Studios, Screen Territory, Film Victoria, Bunya Prods. and Savage Films.

“High Ground” will be distributed in Australia and New Zealand by Madman Entertainment.

Playtime’s current sales slate include the remake of “Goodnight Mommy,” the critically acclaimed Austrian psychological thriller, and Francois Ozon’s “By the Grace of God,” both of which Playtime is co-producing.

Simon Baker in ‘High Ground.’

Simon Baker, Callan Mulvey, Jack Thompson, Aaron Pedersen and newcomer Jacob Jnr Nayinggul are starring in High Ground, a 1930-set action-thriller directed by Stephen Johnson.

Inspired by true events and scripted by Chris Anastassiades, the frontier Western is shooting in Kakadu Park and Arnhem Land, produced by Maggie Miles, Yothu Yindi co-founder Witiyana Marika, Johnson, David Jowsey and Greer Simpkin.

Baker plays Travis, a bounty hunter and former soldier who enlists the help of Gutjuk (Nayinggul) a young Aboriginal orphan, to track down the most dangerous outlaw in the Territory – his uncle. During the manhunt a secret is revealed which ultimately pits them against each other.

Thompson is Moran, the head of the police outpost, with Mulvey as Ambrose, a police officer who fought with Travis in World War One, and Petersen as a lethal black tracker from Queensland.

The cast also includes Caren Pistorious as Claire, the mission manager and teacher, Ryan Corr as Braddock, a priest who is Claire’s brother, John Brumpton, David Field and Andy McPhee.

Petersen tells IF: “We haven’t seen a film like this before. It’s a resistance film which deals with the clash of cultures with colonial forces.”

Jacob Jnr Nayinggul, who hails from Gunbalunya and whose family are traditional owners, impressed the director and producers at auditions.

Renewing his collaboration with Anastassiades following Yolgnu Boy, Johnson said: “This is a story I have wanted to tell for a long time. I’ve worked in collaboration with Mandawuy Yunupingu, Witiyana Marika, Jonathan Nadji, Alfred Nayinggul and many families across Arnhem Land with a sole aim – to create an exciting action packed story for a wide audience that is both entertaining and confronting.”

The Paris-based sales agent Playtime is pitching the film to potential buyers at the American Film Market. Jowsey tells IF: “We have been meeting with the Playtime group at markets over time and they were very passionate about the screenplay for High Ground.”

Playtime co-founder Sebastien Beffa said: “We have been following Australian directors and writers for some time now. Stephen Johnson’s vision in High Ground is one of the most original stories that we have come across in recent years.”

Screen Australia provided major production investment with support from Maxo Studios, Screen Territory, Film Victoria, Bunya Productions and Savage Films. Madman Entertainment will distribute in Australia/New Zealand.

The project was first announced by the Northern Territory government in 2016 and initially was to have starred Guy Pearce and David Gulpilil as well as Thompson.

At the AFM Playtime is staging the world premiere of Fred Grivois’ Somalia-set hostage drama 15 Minutes Of War and launching sales on Emmanuel Hamon’s drama Escape From Rakka, starring Swann Arlaud as a man trying to extract his wife and son from Syria.

Its slate includes 5 is the Perfect Number, an adaptation of the Italian graphic novel by Igort, starring Toni Servillo and Valeria Golino, and Abdel Raouf Dafri’s drama The Breitner Commando, set during the Algerian war of independence. It’s also showing first footage of Francois Ozon’s By The Grace Of God, inspired by the victims of a Catholic priest in Lyon accused of sexually abusing boy scouts.

Thanks DSP. Simon certainly looks the part and it's so nice to see him in different and more diverse roles now. Hopefully he will take on more of these roles in the future (as well as directing) because he seems to have "come into his own" and gained in confidence since Breath and his return to Australia.

I agree. Less pressure since The Mentalist is over, and he can benefit from the series worldwide success as a 'A List' actor.

From T Willoughby Horse Breaking & Training on Facebook:

"And that’s a wrap. For the past 10 weeks we have been up in Arhnem Land and Kakadu filming an Australian movie called High Ground with 17 horses.
Our horses did such a great job, there were some long hot days, lots of standing around and different people on and off their backs but they never let us down.
Now they are taking a few days rest before the journey back down south.
Make sure to keep an eye out for the movie in the next 12-18months. "

(thanks zaras3388 on IG for the last one)

A very touching story about Jack Thompson, legendary Autralian actor featuring in 'High Ground' with Simon. Link to the ABC video below.

Back on Track

Introduced by actor and director Simon Baker

When screen legend Jack Thompson checked himself into Sydney's St Vincent's Hospital last year, he had no idea how sick he was.

Unbeknown to Jack, his kidneys had failed and he was 48 hours away from death.
Told that he would have to go on dialysis three times a week for five hours, he realised his acting career was in jeopardy.

The film he was about to shoot was set in remote Kakadu, 250 km away from the nearest dialysis unit in Darwin.
It looked like he would have to pull out of the movie — until a big purple truck came to the rescue, a gesture of friendship and respect from the Territory's Indigenous community.

Thanks DSP. A remarkable man. His wish to make this film for a number of years is similar to Simon and his wish to make Breath! I hope the film is released in the UK.
