Is the second BTS picture from season 7? I don't recognize it. I love the one with Malcom Mcdowell. They had some great scenes together. Too bad his character can't come back. |

Samsung yeah. It's from the Turn on Tomorrow commercial that he did and that I made my students analyse for a media and persuasive writing task! So of course, we saw it a million times as I kept pointing things out to them...even after they didn't need to see it anymore! It was classwork! That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it lol.  |

The sixth season of The Mentalist starts this week on our Tv. A crucial season for the fan because they’re going to discover Red John’s ID Meeting with the one who assure the success of the series: Simon Baker, AKA Patrick Jane.
If you should make assessment of your Mentalist year…
“The Mentalist changed my life in a thousand ways! But at the same time, it didn’t change the nature of who I am as a person. I’m fighting in fact to be the same guy! What made you able to keep your feet on the ground?
“My wife! (laughs) Whatever if I want it or not, she is the one keeping me floating! But my children too who always supported me, who never judged me, who never reproached me for my repeated absences! You know it doesn’t look like that but I’m not someone very sociable in life! I’m even a little wild sometimes. When I find myself in the bowl we called Hollywood, I don’t feel very at ease! Proof, I often begin to drink and very quickly, I’m ridiculed myself!”

In any relationship, whatever you are under the spotlights or not, there are highs and lows! I’m glad and very proud my couple is mentioned as an example but on the other side, I hate it too for the pressure it put on us! Simply, because we’re like everyone else. We don’t have a miracle recipe to cultivate the love, if it isn’t live at 100% the day-to-day life. My wife and I work both hard. We have kids and like every parents, we’re trying to give them the best without isolate them from reality! The problem of a lot of Hollywood couple is that they bring too often strass and sparkles home! They don’t compartmentalize it. So, they begin to play comedy inside their own home. Our chance, of my wife and I, is that we’ve never let the narcissism and the perverse effects of the notoriety eat us!
If you had the possibility to change one thing in the series, what would that be?
The creative aspect is always a challenge when you turn in a police series. They must follow a lot of rules and factors that you have to respect if you don’t want the spectators to get lost and finally switching channel! You must follow the common thread, especially how the case is led. Therefore, it’s very difficult as an actor to renew. To let our imagination go wild. The setting is to frozen ! I would like that Patrick Jane messes a little around sometimes. Make jokes…
Particularly as the show is demanding
You have no idea! Everything is going so fast on The Mentalist set. We’re filming around 22 episode per season, we even filmed 24. To give you some idea of what I feel sometime, it’s like we were driving very fast in a truck and then suddenly I saw someone opening the truck’s door and emptying the shipment. You work consists then to avoid something which could get you off the road!
How do you see your future once the series will be over?
I had strong relationships during the series, with Robin Tunney (Agent Teresa Lisbon) who I considered like one of my best friends, also Bruno Heller who I will have contact with till the end of my days. I worked with the whole crew not only as a n actor but also as a director on a few episodes. That allowed me have some self-confidence, notably in my capacity of not stagnate in the work! With Robin, we very often asked ourselves bout the end of The Mentalist. We jokes. We told each other that maybe when we’ll be 70, we will animate celebrity cruise!
Not very joyful perspective…
Who know, with Robin, we will walk with our safety jacket on the deck! And in order to stay on board we’ll sign autographed for 5 dollars each. To survive!
More seriously?
I don’t know! What I know for sure is whatever I do now, I’m marked The Mentalist and to the end of my life people will call me Patrick Jane! Anyway, I don’t really know what I will do personnaly. I was on the phone with my wife today, I told her I would like to by a Volkswagen car to bring the boy camp on the East coast of Australia. And for a good monh, camp, cook, surf, etc…
Do you have any professional project in mind?
Yes, there are some I’ll develop, but the most important for me when this series will be over is to take some times for recharge my battery. I need to calm down and enjoy a little my life because I never stopped filming those past years. I was really in an infernal spiral. Anyway, I have to revitalise before getting in another project! Don’t worry, it won’t take long, I’m easily bored if my mind isn’t busy!
Used Simon?
You know, I’m in my forty and I know my body won’t stay in shape long ad visitam aeternam! There will be a lot of thing I couldn’t do anymore. Simply because one day I’m going to break something. I’m by the way convinced of that. It’s sure. This day, I won’t have any other choice than sitting down.
What advice would you give to a young actor who wished start in a TV Show like The Mentalist?
The first advice I would give him is to not make overambitious plans. Make television today is an amazing chance, a great springboard. But, it cans also turn into diving board! I feel lucky because there’s only a few series that get over 6 years. I noticed people have an attention shorter and shorter. I don’t blame them! There so much today on tv, so much news series. They get bored more easily. Look with Homeland. The two first seasons, it was THE series, everybody loved it and then the phenomenon winded. When you know the cost of a series you think twice before beginning the production. Nowaday, we’re even talking of season of 13 episodes and not 24. To come back at the Mentalist , it’s very difficult to stay on a good level. A true challenge! I think however we made it, through the years even if there were unequal episodes and even if I can tell you precisely which episode I loved or not, generate so much volume and staying at a quality level, it’s a real exploit.

Thanks for the articles. Though, I tend to disagree with Simon's example of Homeland as a show that was a victim of viewer boredom. I don't know if Simon actually watched the show, but it lost it's phenomenon standing due to the awful writing of the third season. It was a complete train wreck. Don't even get me started on the incredible amount of time spent on the teenage daughter that went nowhere or the inconsistent writing of the main characters. Sorry for the off-topic mini-rant, but it started out as such a good show and just torpedoed downward. |

Well sound to me too that he might not have watched the show, but I think he's just taken the example of a critically acclaimed show that went under the radar pretty quickly to emphasize the fickleness of the audience.
Must be a constant concern for a lead actor/producer like Simon. We were very lucky to have 7 season of TM (orshould I say 6 seasons and a half?) |
