Roadside Celebrates 'Albert Nobbs,' Prepares to Mount Late Campaign for 'Margin Call'
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race....-260754

Excerpt:
This year, Roadside are strongly pushing Nobbs, with the hope of scoring Close a best actress nod (and possibly a career-acknowledgement victory) and McTeer a best supporting actress nod -- and, they decided in the last 48-hours, another film, as well: Margin Call.

Enthusiastic reviews from several high-profile critics and timely subject matter helped to elicit strong turnout at movie houses and phenomenal interest on VOD (that's how I saw it earlier this week), and the resulting word-of-mouth buzz and media attention have convinced the studio that the film -- which received a best ensemble Gotham Awards nod earlier this month -- has a very strong shot at garnering major awards attention in the coming weeks and months: a best ensemble SAG nod and a best original screenplay Oscar nod being the most realistic targets; perhaps best supporting actor SAG/Globe/Oscar nods for Irons and/or Spacey (although both are currently working overseas and therefore unable to do all of the glad-handing that successful awards campaigns usually demand); and, unlikely but not impossible, a best picture Oscar nod.

Consequently, screeners have already been mailed to the HFPA, with others for SAG and the Academy still on the way; Quinto is doing SAG Q&As and will probably attend the Gothams, perhaps with Irons and other members of the cast; and Roadside is starting to buy ads on various websites that might be read by awards voters. In other words, they're all in.

As it turns out, Margin Call, against all odds, may turn out to be the one true "late surprise" of the awards season that we've all been waiting for.

FEINBERG'S 5: Billy Crystal, AFI Fest, 'The Iron Lady,' 'Margin Call,' Morgan Freeman
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/billy-crystal-oscars-afi-260832

Excerpt:
Roadside Attractions has decided to mount a late but aggressive campaign on behalf of the timely Wall Street drama Margin Call, which was written and directed by first-time filmmaker J.C. Chandor and features an incredible ensemble cast led by Zachary Quinto, Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Irons, Paul Bettany, Stanley Tucci, Simon Baker, Demi Moore, and Mary McDonnell. The film, which was released concurrently in select theaters and on VOD on October 21, quickly generated enthusiastic support from critics and phenomenal numbers on VOD, convincing the little studio -- which has previously guided The Cove (2009), Biutiful (2010), and Winter's Bone (2010) to Oscar success -- that they have a second contender on their hands to go along with Albert Nobbs, for which they hope to score a best actress nod for Glenn Close and a best supporting actress nod for Janet McTeer.

Margin Call, which one publicist described as "The Help for men," received a best ensemble Gotham Awards nod earlier this month, and seems to have a strong shot a best ensemble SAG nod and a best original screenplay Oscar nod; a so-so shot at best supporting actor SAG/Globe/Oscar nods for Irons and/or Spacey (although both are currently working overseas and therefore unable to do much glad-handing); and a long shot at a best picture Oscar nod. Roadside has already mailed screeners to the HFPA, with others for SAG and the Academy still to come; Quinto is doing SAG Q&As and will probably attend the Gothams, perhaps with Irons and other members of the cast; and the studio is starting to buy ads on various websites that might be read by awards voters.

Attending the Gotham Independent Film Awards in New York tonight where Margin Call is nominated for the Best Ensemble Performance Award - JC Chandor, Neal Dodson, Zach Quinto, Stanley Tucci and Penn Badgley. So unsurprisingly, Simon won't be there.

Update: The Award was won by 'Beginners' with Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer, Mélanie Laurent, Goran Visnjic, Kai Lennox, Mary Page Keller, Keegan Boos.

Margin Call wins New York Film Critics Circle Award

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news....-267053

The New York Film Critics Circle named Roadside Attractions' Wall Street-set thriller Margin Call best first feature as it gathered on Tuesday to vote its best films of the year.

Announcing its picks via a Twitter feed, the account's first tweet read, "We are convening now and will be tweeting as the voting progresses," Tuesday morning.

Margin Call was the first winner, revealed at 10:10 a.m. ET. The film was directed by J.C. Chandor and starred Zachary Quinto, Stanley Tucci and Kevin Spacey.

Best nonfiction film went to Werner Herzog's documentary, Cave of Forgotten Dreams, on the Chauvet caves of Souther France, which have the oldest-known pictorial human creations on earth.

The NYFCC was founded in 1935, and is comprised of film reviewers from New York-based publications. At the end of each calendar year, the organization meets to vote on the best films of the previous year's films.

The categories include: best picture, director, screenplay, actor, actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, cinematography, animated movie and best first film.

Excerpt from article 'What the Gotham Awards Results Mean -- And Don't (Analysis)'

Roadside Attractions has to feel a little disappointed with the way things turned out for their films. IFP first denied Albert Nobbs any nominations, and then denied Margin Call -- a red-hot film at the moment -- a win in the one category in which it was nominated and really fit the bill: best ensemble. As great a film as the category's winner Beginners is, it's primarily a four-person flick (Ewan McGregor, Melanie Laurent, Christopher Plummer and Goran Visnjic), whereas its hard to even keep count of all of the impressive moving pieces in Margin Call (Zachary Quinto, Jeremy Irons, Kevin Spacey, Stanley Tucci, Paul Bettany, Demi Moore, Simon Baker, Penn Badgley, Mary McDonnell and the list goes on).
