I hadn't seen this before. Great find Fran!!! I just don't understand what his friend John told him. Can anybody please tell?
Thanks so much for finding it, Fran.

His friend told him "Let your smile be your umbrella", and Simon ads that he took that literally for his character of Patrick Jane.
I think he talked about his best friend who died of a liver cancer in 2009 or 2010.

Thank you Fran for posting that, it's very interesting. I see that SAG has made DVD with this series of "Conversations", and there's a Simon Baker DVD too, but apparently theyare only available for librairies…

Thanks Fran for posting !
If his friend told him "Let your smile be your umbrella" it seems like the smile is a protection, as for hiding ???? dry

My take is that SB used that to influence his interpretation of the character of Patrick Jane. Jane gets through the day with a shield of humor, both to hide his despair from others and to keep it from crushing him.

Thanks Fran. He is a person of great sensitivity so that he's a great artist. I love his excitement when he mentions his best friend. Simon is a special guy.

Does anyone know if he is the friend who gave the nickname of "smiley" to Simon? Could be.

Thanks for such a gem of an interview. I do remember in the Larry King interview that he was with a sick friend when he was offered this role so I do presume that was John. Such a adequate way to describe Jane to! And of course he would be a loyal friend.

What a nice little interview. You can see that he gets quite emotional talking about his friend John. June - I thought that the friend who gave him the nickname of "smiley" was Josh Black who died in 2010 but I am not 100% sure of that.

Another little gem. You can hear the crack in his voice when he mentions his friend John. Simon is such a sweet sensitive guy.

Wow, thanks Fran - loved this little nugget. When he gets a little bit choked up about his friend, awwhhhh, I just want to hug him. But even at that point, he puts his friend's advice into action and forces his way through the emotion, recovering with a smile. Such a lovely man - restores my faith in the male of the species! It's interesting to note, though (and it's not the first time I've noticed it) that for all of his confidence and enthusiasm, he does have a lot of mannerisms which are self-comforting or based in nervous behaviour. Guess it totally fits with what he's saying about us all having many contrasts within ourselves. Nice to know he's human, too. smile

That was a very sweet insight into the man.
