What is it about his acting style that appeals to you?

First and foremost for me it's his eyes. When he's sad you could absolutely drown in them.

A look, a raised eyebrow, he barely needs a script.

Next (for me) is his very expressive hands. We all use our hands when we communicate but I've noticed Simon's hands being especially descriptive - both in 'real life' and in his portrayal of Patrick Jane.

I have also noticed that - more often than not - he holds a woman's chin when he kisses her. A very tactile person.

I could probably write a book on what I love about Simon's acting style, so its difficult to know where to start.

Eyes - yes definitely, very expressive eyes. He's able to portray incredible depth of emotion, so that it appears to come from feelings deep inside him. A comment I saw that I completely agree with is "when Simon looks sad, he looks sad through to his soul". By contrast, he can also do lovely sparkly, twinkly eyes that help to make his whole face light up.

Subtlety of expression - yes I agree, he can communicate without a script. He seems to have complete control of his facial muscles, so that the tiniest movement can tell us what he's thinking or feeling. I think The Guardian demonstrated this talent perfectly, Nick didn't always say a lot but Simon used the silences to great effect.

I also love the way he uses his hands - beautiful sensuous hands.

And his body language is also expressive and honest. I think Simon is a very observant, empathetic person and he uses this in his performances. A wonderful example of body language, is his first kiss with Lulu - I think the whole scene is mesmerising. And when they hear Brian, the kiss is broken off but Nick's body is still leaning towards Lulu as though he can't bear to tear himself away.

I have to give a brief mention to his voice - I love the crack in it that we sometimes hear.

I find that absolutely sexy and endearing.
Simon has a very emotive face which allows him to portray varied emotions even without dialogue. That scene when Kristina Fry told him that she talked to his wife, that was one example where we see him shift from light hearted emotion to something darker.

fangs4fun That scene really got me. Simon is so good at crying.

Fran you are so good at describing everything that I feel about him. I just wouldn't know how to begin.

I agree with all your comments. Simon is a really good actor who brings his characters to life. Which is why I don't understand why the consensus among some used to be that he was bland. That's how my (snooty) movie loving friend described him when I said I really loved him in The Mentalist. I've also read a ton of reviews of his old movies, and that word does pop up once in awhile. The only explanation I can think of is that people were categorizing him on the basis of his good looks. I read in an interview with someone (Moonves?) that some actors have good looks and some have acting ability, but it's rare to have both, and Simon does. So I'm assuming people reacted to him on the basis of his good looks, and grossly underestimated his abilities.

Wand I agree, I have all of Simon's movies in my collection, and while some of them are poor in themselves, Simon's performance is always a shining light......Bland is a word that I would struggle to use in connection with him.

I feel exceedingly lucky to live in this time....we get to see Simon acting his socks off in The Mentalist, and while the snobby ones may turn their collective noses up at a TV series...we get to see Simon portraying just about every emotion in the book.....most of them without words.

I think that in time his worth will be appreciated by more people (but we were in on the ground floor so to speak) in my opinion he is up there with the best actors from the past.....he has always reminded me of a mix of Paul Newman, Clint Eastwood and Robert Redford with just a hint of Steve McQueen thrown in for good measure.

tongue Drooooooooooool!! tongue

I think there are some people who can only appreciate very obvious performances (scenery-chewing is the term used I think), and they lack the ability to appreciate nuance and perfectly observed subtlety. Their loss biggrin

To Wand612: They say that good looks is a variable related to success in life. But it can also have its drawbacks in that sometimes others do not take seriously very good looking people. It can happen with good looking women too, when very often they are thought to be progressing mostly on the basis of their looks and not because they are intelligent, capable and hard working!!!!

Anyway, Simon has got both the looks and the talent and his time has come to be recognised (I am sure)!!!!

I think he is a great actor. Every character he plays is amazing.
His eyes are so expressive *-* A perfect example I always remember when it comes to his eyes is the last episode of the third season of the mentalist.. when he is in front of the fake red john and he talks about his wife and daughter, his eyes are so sad.. a perfect acting for a scene like that biggrin
