I find this film refreshingly different and very funny so its guaranteed to cheer me up and give me a good laugh. I think its also a remarkable performance by Simon where Roderick, so suave and sophisticated at the start of the film goes through various transformations before finding himself.

For me, the whole film is very close to being a farce, but it just falls short of that thanks to Simon who always stays just the right side of the line, making Rod believable. But despite the irreverent humour, I think this film has a serious moral message, that having sex and sharing a life with someone you love is more rewarding than lots of sex with strangers. It explores how it might feel for a man to live out all his sexual fantasies, and also how it feels for a man not to be able to have sex with the woman he thinks he loves. This fantasy life makes Roderick very unhappy to the extent that he gives up on life, as we see in the cafe scene with Death Nell.

Some of my favourite moments are:
When Rod shakes himself after being barged by the boys, and also the crackling noise and "Bad connection" moment.
The happy dance down the stairs before he realises the awful truth about Cynthia Rose.
Burying the list in the garden. I love this scene with Trixie 'It's a piece of paper, not a body'. She's great, I really enjoyed her relationship with Rod.
After the White Room, when Roderick plumps down on the settee and we see his face gradually transform from a look of horror to delight. This is my favourite scene from the whole movie - pure genius.

This film didn't hit the spot for me but it was a pleasant watch.

Simon is well cast and puts in an excellent performance. Trixie is an enjoyable character.

I didn't understand the white room or the machine - but that wouldn't have mattered if I had found the
film funny. I have wondered if I would've found it funnier if an established comedy actor had been cast - Owen Wilson, Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler etc but I don't think so. I think it was the writing/directing (same person) that just wasn't my thing.

Simon has, however, never looked sexier. love

Have to agree with you there Jude, Simon looked absolutely scrumptious in this one.

I don't know if you've read it, but there was an interview with Daniel Waters where he said that originally Ben Stiller was considering the role. I think it would have been much more of a farce with him playing Roderick, and would probably have been more successful at the box office, although I don't think I would have enjoyed it.

Ben Stiller?

I love finding out who was considered for a role and wondering what the film or programme would've been like with a different actor.

It would've been a very different film with Ben, whether I would've found it funnier I don't know, he's not one of my favourite actors. I suspect some of the internal dialogue (is that the correct term?) would've had to be changed - I thought it was a bit too 'clever' and whilst it sounded believable coming from Simon I'm not sure it would've rung true if said by Ben Stiller - his characters are usually so silly aren't they?

No, I'm not really a fan of Ben Stiller, and I agree with you that Roderick's thoughts wouldn't have been believable with him in the role. He's much less attractive too, so I'm not sure that all those women fancying him would have rung true.

The interview, parts of which I found interesting, is here: http://thehollywoodinterview.blogspot.com/2008....ew.html
