"Tony Astrino: writers' assistant, note taker, contract maker, show bible keeper, manning the Twitter feed. Ask me anything!"

Reply to question 'was wondering if there is a Christmas themed episode this year?' - "No holiday ep this year. Just in our hearts. They're hard to do on a regular basis. And they're rarely good."

Response to question about distribution of episodes among writers - "As creator, Bruno handles premieres and finales. Exec producers next. On down the line, based on level. Most shows that way."

Response to question about Van Pelt/Rigsby - "Their past will always color their present. But this season Van Pelt too emotionally wrecked over discovery of killer fiancé."

Response to question about Red John - "Yes, Red John exists. Jane will not give up the pursuit until he catches him. Not at liberty to reveal more."

"We average about 51 pages a script. Excluding all our production pages"

"From assignment until final draft, a script takes about two months to hammer out. This includes production rewrites."

"In the room, working on 420. Guesses as to how long this room session will last?"

"Room is now about 414"

"Ok, room finally ended. Total Time = 2 hours 28 minutes. Now editing notes. Happy Halloween."

"Morning Friends! Tony back in the driver's seat again. Will be here all week. Might post some pictures today. Already in the room on 414."

"Ok, finally done with 414 room. Looks good. Sitting down to lunch. Just me and the stories in here." http://yfrog.com/h0rljwsj

"We're all pretty deep in different stages of stories now. But when we get a chance this is the writers' room view" http://yfrog.com/g03ymsj

"Around 90 people, besides actors, work the set on any given day. Room poster #1" http://yfrog.com/ny5u1cij

"The calming presence of Hiroshige is writers' room poster #2" http://yfrog.com/h7ue6jtqj

"The entire cast and crew is lucky enough to get a month off for Christmas season, and around two months for summer hiatus."

"Addendum: Although the cast and crew get months of summer hiatus, the writers only get a few weeks at most."

"Alright folks, I bid you adieu and leave you with the last writers' room poster, #3" http://yfrog.com/nyvrahj

"Each episode has one writer but we all chip in to help when asked. Iron sharpens iron."

"Each writer has an office they write in. Some writers work better from home when on deadline, though."

"We use the writers' room to fine tune and brainstorm ideas. The Japanese poster was brought in by yours truly, Tony Astrino."

"Each writer is on set for most of the shooting done for their episode. The writers assistant stays in the office."

" Writers Assistant is a 9 to 5 job. Writers come in every day and often work late and weekends"

"Tony Astrino (that's me), is the only writers assistant on the Mentalist. Lucky to be working for cool writers."

"The actors usually get the scripts at the start of pre-production, around eight days in advance."

"Each writer creates their own character names. For legal reasons we have to avoid names that are too unique/rare."

"The Red John smiley face has become our own Nike "Swoosh" and we use it for lots of things. Example #1: Our lobby" http://yfrog.com/g0vrwsqj

"The photo of the smiley face in our lobby is a plastic sign attached to our wall. Not a Photoshop fakery."

"There are nine writers working on the Mentalist right now."

"Bruno and our art department created the smiley face. Example #2: Red John likes our carts!" http://yfrog.com/h77qcuzj

"I'm a friend of Red John, are you? Example #3, our hoodies have been branded" http://yfrog.com/hwpmfjgj

"Spent morning pitching idea for my next episode. All went well. Should be a fun one!"
Reply to 'Does that mean the board is full now instead of blank?' - "Board is full. Off to outline."

About Simon & Owain - "As soon as the director yells "cut" the American accents drop. Amazing how they can go in and out of it so easily."

Reply to 'how about a case involving supermodels?' - "Trust me, if I could write a supermodel episode I would. Think I've tried pitching it 100 times."

Reply to 'Who decides the general storyline of the show?' - "General story for the whole season is come up with by all writers. Of course Bruno has final say."

About the line 'There's no business like Cho business' - "That was a great Simon Baker ad-lib. Great line."

"same kitchen. They just moved the island for video village."
Video Village - "it's where we (director, scripty DP, producers, me, etc) watch on monitors what's being shot."

Reply to 'How long does it take to shoot one scene?' - "it depends on the complexity of the scene, how many actors, etc. It's quite variable"

Reply to 'Is there any chance we'll see Lindsay Smith from "Miss Red" again?' - "Not in the cards to see her anytime soon, but you never know. She was such a fun character. And a great actress!"

"We have 9 writers on our staff. Occasionally we bring on someone to write a freelance episode."
