Owain wowed by Mentalist success

I've put this here instead of the 'Other News' page because Owain makes a very interesting comment about the show being low budget, which to be honest I hadn't realised.

Owain Yeoman has revealed the success of The Mentalist really took him by surprise.

The series, which is currently in its fourth series on Channel 5, features a former psychic medium helping the California Bureau of Investigation solve crimes, and Owain clearly remembers downplaying the show's chance of success when it first aired.

"I said to Tim Kang, who plays Special Agent Kimball Cho, 'We'll wait for the first episode to air and then I guess I'll see you next pilot season. Good luck'," said the Welsh actor.

"Then it aired, did really well and we said, 'We'll see how it does next week'. I've never let go of that fear as an actor. It's good though, it keeps you hungry."

Owain's clearly pleased that low-budget series, in which he plays CBI Special Agent Wayne Rigsby, is now doing so well, considering its minnow status in a sea of Hollywood crime drama sharks.

"We are quite a humble show and, from a studio network's point of view, it's the dream ticket - a show that doesn't cost very much, but is watched by millions of people."

Owain is nothing but grateful for all The Mentalist has afforded him.

"To know you can pay the rent and be in front of a camera every day is such a luxury for an actor. I never lose sight of that," he said.

France goes mental for Mentalist: http://www.c21media.net/archives/74497

The Mentalist dominated the top 2011 ratings in France, while the third season of the series improved ad revenues for its host channel TF1.

Some 21 episodes of The Mentalist appeared among the 50 best-rated shows last year in France last year, according to Médiamétrie 2011 audience charts published yesterday by TF1.

The series’ highest performer was the first episode of the third season, which had 10.4 million viewers and a 44.4% audience share. Overall, it was the fifth best-rated show in France last year, behind sports, news and charity special events.

Last year, the Rugby World Cup France vs New Zealand final football game led the audience charts with a massive 15.4 million viewers and an 82.3% share. It was followed by popular charity variety special Dans l’œil Des Enfoirés and by the September 18 evening newscast which had as guest Dominique Strauss-Khan. Both had 12.5m viewers, a 49.7% and 44.4% share respectively.

The third Mentalist season kicked off on TF1 August 31 through to December 28 on Wednesday evenings, with several episodes broadcast back-to-back.

Following a new episode of the third season were re-runs of season two in the second part of the evening. According to ad-tracking company Yacast, the 24 Mentalist primetime broadcasts generated 4.8% more advertising than the season two debut in 2010, amounting to an estimated €99.8m (US$130.3m) of gross ad revenue.

Episodes of The Mentalist dominate the Médiamétrie chart, claiming all the spots from number five through to 16. House claimed two spots, the best-rated of which drew 9.5 million viewers and a 34.8% share. Criminal Minds’ highest-rated episode was the 20th best-rated show in France last year with 9.4 million and a 33% share. These three US series have totalled 41 of the 50 best-rated programmes nationally, all on TF1.

Two movies appear in the top 50: locally-produced De L’autre Côté Du Lit in 21st position (9.4 million viewers, a 35.4% share), and Die Hard 4 in 43rd (9 million and 34%).

As regards French drama, only Doc Martin, the French remake to the British series starring popular French movie star Thierry Lhermitte, made it among the 50 best-rated shows – in 34th position with 9.1 million viewers and a 32.9% share. However, the following episodes of the series proved far less successful.

TVLine are a bit late with this scoop, I think we already know all this:

The Mentalist | I’ve got some exclusive casting details from the CBS procedural, and Part 1 involves another appearance by cult leader Bret Stiles, played by the always entertaining Malcolm McDowell. He will be in a sweeps episode airing Feb. 23 and also guest-starring CSI alumna Louise Lombard as the Dean of a college associated with the Visualize Cult. The CBI crew will question Lombard’s character when a student’s brother is found murdered.

What you can learn by watching TV (CBS MoneyWatch)

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-50....hing-tv

Excerpt:
The Mentalist's Patrick Jane. It's not necessarily obvious, but the reason Patrick Jane is so brilliant at solving crimes is because the guy really gets the value of taking time to think and getting others to relax so they'll reveal things they otherwise wouldn't. That's why he's always laying on couches and drinking tea pretty much everywhere he goes. Jane's a breath of fresh air in a society that's perpetually distracted by smartphones and social media and rarely present and living in the moment.

Not likely if you've ever seen Craig Ferguson's show. LOL. It's wacky, it's funny and refreshing from the usual same same interviews but talking about projects? Usually not something that really happens. A guest is lucky their show/project gets plugged at the end of the interview.
