2012 (May 20th) Meeting Simon Baker, London
    27-May-12, 12:54 PM
So I started out my day on Sunday, May 20 planning to do some sightseeing in London. I’d be lying to say Simon wasn’t the first attraction on my mind. But since I saw a night shooting picture before, I thought they’d be shooting at night rather than in broad daylight on a Sunday. So my original plan was to check out Soho in the evening. Somehow I got lost in Piccadilly and was suddenly near Soho Square around 2pm. Ok, probably my heart led me there. I just passed China Town and saw crowds and cameras. I told myself not to freak out. They cannot be filming I Give It A Year right over there! Very calmly I asked a security. The guy said they were filming a rom-com and my heart started pumping really fast. I waited until I heard the name "I Give It A Year”, then I asked quickly "Is Simon Baker here?” The guy said yes and I started screaming, drawing a collective "shiii” from people nearby. Well, I didn’t know I was close to the video village. At first I couldn’t see anything, so I asked a girl around who was filming. She said "Do you know The Mentalist”, and of course I screamed again. It’s not like I am a screaming person, just I couldn’t help it.

Finally I saw Simon’s face between the cameras. It felt so surreal and I still remember today how it felt. My first thought was wow, he is so thin, thinner than on TV. They finished with one take and I could move a little closer. Simon happened to be passing by in my direction and I yelled "hi, Simon”. He turned to me, said hi back with a wave. After another take, Simon was facing my direction and I waved. He saw it and waved back. Then I shouted "you were great in season finale”. Simon immediately gave me a thumbs-up and said something back, not just thank you. From his facial expression, it was like a question. But I couldn’t hear it because he didn’t raise his voice and we were pretty far away. I was dying to know what he just said. At this point, a security guy came and blocked me.

The scene they were filming that day was Simon and Rose Byrne meeting the other couple. Rose Byrne seems to be playing a couple with Simon, not sure a married couple or just a hook-up. She seems to be a friend of the other couple and it looked like the first time Simon’s character meets them. She and Simon were arguing on their way before meeting the other couple. This was probably the only scene they were filming that day. The security told me Simon arrived around 8:00 am on set. He stayed until around 4:00 pm when the shooting finished.

The security was asked all the time who was filming. Each time they said The Mentalist guy. Funny because the male and female leads were also on set. Simon was recognized by locals and many tourists. When someone was doing Simon’s hair, I heard one girl saying I want to touch his hair too. So I guess it’s universal that people want to touch his hair, lol.

Since I stayed for almost 2 hours, the security who blocked me said to me: I think you are in love with Simon Baker and mimicked me screaming.

    Me (shamelessly): Yes, I am.

The guy was like, ok you win and then kept joking the memory is full.

One background actor later approached me because I obviously appeared to be a big fan. So I asked him about the accent. It’s funny I asked 2 people and the first response was always "You know, he is Australian”. Simon should be using his American accent if the guy was not mistaken.

Towards the end of the shooting, Rebecca came with Harry (I believe). They came from another direction and I wished I could tell Rebecca I am a big fan of your husband and see her reaction. Lol.

Finally the director said cut and the shooting was over. I was still not sure if I was allowed to come closer. Then I saw crowds of people moving towards Simon. When I got there, fans were taking pictures with him and Simon was saying "real quick”. One guy even pulled out The Mentalist DVD. How could he come so prepared? I regret so much I got nothing with me. But I managed to take a picture. Simon so naturally put his arm around my shoulder, while I was busy looking for someone to take a picture for me. And I put my arm around his waist too. Now I need to build a museum for that coat I was wearing that day. After the picture, Simon turned to another fan and suddenly I remembered red john’s voice. I said "Simon”, he turned to me, and I continued "Did you do red john’s voice?” Simon said a "Yes?” during my question and my heart almost sank. But when he heard it out, he said firmly without hesitation "No, I didn’t”. So the "yes?” was a paying-attention-yes. It was so sweet that Simon listened to a fan so attentively. Another fan before me was also talking quite in length to him and you can see he was paying attention. During the whole time, he felt like someone I knew for a long time, not just someone from the screen. A strange (in a good way) and sweet feeling. And no need to say he is truly gorgeous in person.
