    2010 (March) APJ Update
    02-May-11, 1:28 AM
Artists for Peace & Justice - Medical Mission Update
2nd March 2010 Artists for Peace and Justice

Board member Dr. Reza Nabavian shares his amazing story about two children that received emergency medical support thanks to the tremendous efforts of Mending Kids International and APJ.

On a recent APJ mission to St. Damien's Pediatric Hospital in Port-au-Prince, I had the opportunity to be part of a team that was able to help 2 seriously injured Haitian girls: Wildalina and Judelande.

Wildalina, age 9, had lost her left eye and sustained injuries to her skull that were treated at CHLA. She will have a prosthetic left eye and is doing well. She is enjoying her recovery time with the host family in Los Angeles, the generous APJ supporters Rebecca and Simon Baker.

Judelande, age 7 was too sick to travel all the way to LA due to serious internal injuries and thus was treated in Florida and is recovering well from her injuries. We are so thankful to be working with Mending Kids International, the organization that made helping Wildalina and Judelande possible.

Mending Kids International is a non-profit organization, which organizes, finances and provides life-changing, surgical care to children outside the United States who do not have access to the procedures they need. MKI offers hope to children around the world by arranging donated medical treatment for those who suffer from serious, yet surgically correctable medical conditions. In the past four years, Mending Kids International has provided transformational surgery for 332 children from 35 countries.

On the humanitarian side of its mission, APJ remains committed to the well being of children at St. Damien's. There is a devastated population of amputees and wounded who will have a horrendous time incorporating back into their society or whatever may be left of it. The importance of appropriate wound care and rehabilitation at this time cannot be over-emphasized. APJ supports the delivery of this care at St. Damien pediatric hospital. Its efforts are directed at enabling the local providers to deliver the best possible care.
