Quote AgentM ( ) They are both con-men after all...and I don't think you can beat The Sting for the perfect 'con' movie.
Totally agree with you, AgentM. "The Sting" is one of my favorite movies and as you say, the perfect con movie. Robert Redford's character is similar to Patrick Jane's in some way. I've never heard that this movie was a reference to create "The Mentalist" but it's impossible not to have it in mind watching some episodes of the series. I think in "Cackle-Bladder Blood", with Jane faking his own death, with a devilish grin, enjoying like a kid with false blood stains in his shirt and face and I can't help to think in Paul Newman and Robert Redford. |

I have also been reminded of Robert Redford in some pictures of Simon. There's one in particular that I'll have to find. "The Sting" is one of the first movies that I can remember seeing in a theater as a kid. I quite agree Juney that there is a similar feel to some of the episodes of TM. |

I've got a bit of a soft spot for both Paul Newman & Robert Redford, love 'The Sting' and also 'Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid'. I've read articles where Simon's looks have been compared to Steve McQueen, but I've always thought he looked more similar to Robert Redford, particularly the boyish cheeky look. |

I've often made the same connection, Fran. They do have a lot of expressions in common sometimes. lol, I've often thought about what it would be like if they were in a movie together - maybe a comedy of sorts as father and son! Maybe I should get writing... |

Oh, please don't get me started on Redford - I can't stop. So many movies I love. Jeremiah Johnson is my absolute favorite of his as an actor, but The Sting and Butch Cassidy and Brubaker and All the President's Men and The Way We Were....oh, and another one that really floats my boat, The Electric Horseman. I enjoyed All is Lost recently - a movie that did not get promoted but should have landed Redford an Oscar nomination, IMO. Not many people can hold the screen for that long. The showing I saw, you could have heard a pin drop.
Not only do Redford and Baker have similar "coloring" but they both have an understated style, which I love, and yeah, that mischievous grin. No scenery chewing. I do think Baker is perhaps the better actor, although Redford achieved more box office success. That may have been more due to the era than anything else - there were many more feature film dramas made back in the 70's and 80's.
As much as I love Redford on screen, I think he really found his calling as a director. Ordinary People is one of the best movies ever, IMO, and Quiz Show and River Runs Through It were excellent also. Perhaps Baker will do so as well. They're both intelligent, thoughtful men who have their ducks in a row.

I looked in the gallery and this is the photo that reminds me the most of Redford. http://thebakerboy.ucoz.com/photo....-0-1524 I did have the pleasure once of meeting Mr. Redford when he spent some time in Nebraska with his son. He was a consummate gentleman. |

Yes, Simon has been also compared with Steve McQueen. I like McQueen, he was a very good actor but he represented a sort of tough guy, without the vulnerability, complexity that Simon is able to show in his works. And he didn't have the adorable childish charm that Simon has. If I had to compare him with any other actor, it would be with Paul Newman or Robert Redford, and Cary Grant. I saw recently "Charade" and I could see easily Patrick Jane. |

Lucky you, kim!
This scene in Flame Red was always one where I thought Baker looked a lot like Redford. The plaid shirt helped, no doubt. http://tvscreencaps.smallvilleph.com/display....y_media |

Yeah, Hayseed, that's exactly the scene I was thinking of when comparing the two of them. |
