Looking at the Walk of Fame videos I noticed that Simon was reading is notes sans spectacles. Contacts??? Loved his comments about his family, wife and children and certainly the lovely Stella.

sylvia, you don't need spectacles to read something that is close when you're short-sighted like Simon (and like me!). And So no need to wear contact lens smile
And if my memory serves me well, he's said he never wears contacts

You're right DS...but I thought I heard him say on This Morning when he was in London, that he is now both short and long-sighted so he has to get bi-focals! Guess he musn't be at the stage where he absolutely needs glasses to read yet! He did have them with him at the Walk of Fame thing though, I've seen a picture of him cleaning them....Course he may just have been too nervous to remember to put them on! He didn't appear to actually use his notes other than to start and to remind himself of the different people to thank. The rest of his speech seemed to be off-the-cuff ('winging it' as Simon said!). I loved that about it - it truly came from the heart. Got to love the man! love

Speaking as someone nearsighted who has also developed the need for bifocals as I have aged, my guess is that he can read sufficiently well at that distance without his glasses. I can.

On other videos taken from different angle, you can see his notes on paper, and it seems written in rather big characters.

Simon is at the age where he has what is called 'adult' vision, i.e. he'll need lineless trifocals or he'll have to use two pairs of glasses, one for close up work and one for distance. He is very nearsighted, but as you get older you start to go farsighted, hence 'adult vision.'
