Yeah, the last one is definitely tongue in cheek biggrin

And I was a bit surprised by his candor, but then again he has been pretty frank about his sex life before (I remember a interview in Cosmopolitan, I think, where he was talking about his first time).

I find some of these questions quite intrusive and to be honest with Simon being such a private person I'm surprised he answered all of them! I'm wondering if it was a man or woman asking the questions! Not sure if he answered tongue in cheek, sarcastically or truthfully!! confused

Well that was an interesting set of answers! Quite refreshing for his honesty but like Bee has suggested probably a bit of tongue in cheek too.

WoW Thanks Ruuger for the translation. That did seem to be quite a departure form the normally shy answers of Simon recently. I wonder how many drinks he had before this interview.

Thanks a lot for the translation!

I don't know...did he really say all this? He said before he started surfing when he was 7. And all these other answers ...I'm a little sceptical ...
He takes psychotropics? Can't think about Simon doing this. And so many drinks? That would mean he has a problem, drinking alcohol every day and up to 6 drinks a day in summer.
And he sure goes to bed late more than once a year, with all the events he is visiting.

I only now noticed that the webpage mentions that this is only an excerpt, so there is probably a longer interview in the print version of the magazine.

edit to add: Though I'm not sure anyone actually wants to buy a copy since apparently Lui magazine used to be a porn magazine... Though they have apparenly recently relaunced as a 'high end men's magazine'... wink

Well, psychotropics can also refer to things like antidepressants, and since Simon has sometimes vaguely referred to having had panic attacks and being depressed before he met Rebecca, he might be taking some medication like that. It could even be just an off-the-counter drug like St. Joh's Wort. On the other hand he has aso mentioned having smoked marihuana when he was younger (it comes up in several interviews he did for Land of the Dead), and while it's not legal in Australia, the stigma is much smaller there than in most parts of US or Europe.

And so many drinks? That would mean he's an alcoholic, drinking alcohol every day and up to 6 drinks a day in summer.

I would say that a glass of wine (or a bottle of beer) a day doesn't make him an alcoholic, not by far - a glass or even two is well within the recommendation. Neither does getting drunk every now and then. He's always said that he's the stereotypical Australian who drinks a lot.

I have to say that at first I did find Simon'a answers strangely revealing, but on second thought, there isn't really anything here that he hasn't at least alluded to before. He has always been very frank about certain issues (sex being one of them), and he's obviously far more comfortable talking to the French press than the US press (presumably because he doesn't have to be afraid of saying something wrong).

I'm sorry, but I just don't believe he really gave all these answers until I see it as a video, seeing him saying all these things.

ruuger, He was talking about up to 6 drinks every day in summer, not only one glass of wine or one bottle of beer...and this is a lot of alcohol and sure would indicate he has a problem.

Is he really the kind of person who would take antidepressants?

This is all very unlike Simon ...

I'm happy with his honesty in this interview. We know he often has a way to get round intrusive or embarassing questions, and I understand it perfectly. I think I'd do the same, because everyone is free to chose to answer or not answer a question.

I'm a bit surprised at some reactions here though. And I agree totally with ruuger on her comments.

Yes grass is a psychotropic (illegal in many places), and sleeping pills or anxyolitic are too. He said he's smoked weed when he was younger, and I won't be dazed if he still do sometimes with friends when on holidays… happy And he says he's insomniac occasionally. He is anxious. He doesn't say he's an addict though. Maybe he uses one of them from times to times when needed. So psychotropics. As billions of people. So what?
About a drink a day, I know that doctors consider the daily frequency as a criterion of addiction to alcohol… But come on, is it shocking to picture Simon having one or two glass of red wine at dinner, or sipping his beer at the end of the day? Where he came from, drinking a six pack with friends is usual. Does he look like an alcoholic to you?
As regarding his answers about sex, I've always thought he is not embarrassed talking about sex. i think it's more difficult for him to talk about his family history or his vulnerabilities than about his penis.

Beware of putting him on a pedestal!
Baker's no perfection. He's a normal guy, who comes from an Australian working class background. He's a little rough on the edges, but always want to be better.
He has many qualities, that make him stand out and make him a quite exceptional person in many ways.
One of his quality is honesty (wich you can also consider as a weakness, depends) and if you listen to what he often says, he's also like anyone else. He likes earthly delights, good food, drinks and sex. And has imperfections, flaws and doubts. He's still "Silly Old Baker".

I know journalists can be twisted, and a certain kind of press is to be taken with a grain of salt, but in this case, I don't understand why those answers are suspicious to some of you? Do they destroy the Simon Baker's Myth?

Make me love him more. He is so beautifully human. We are very fortunate he became an actor! He could've been a nurse instead… tongue

And sorry for the rant (got a little bit carried away).

DS, I was just saying my opinion, and I think everybody has the right to believe or not believe ...and I just don't believe that this interview is real.

I know he is a normal guy, I know he has his flaws, too. But why whould he tell the whole world about it? He is usually very shy in revealing too much of his personal life.

I just wanted to make this clear, I would accept all these things if true, I would never say or think anything negative about Simon. I'm not thinking of him being Superman or perfect in anything.

I'm a bit sad to be attacked saying out what I'm thinking about it and because I don't believe that this interview was really given by Simon sad
...not anything written in the press has necessarily to be true ...

I will be more careful from now on because I'm the last one being the reason for rants or for making people angry about things I write...

Tina, I'm not angry! I'm not!

You have the right to not believe this interview is fake. You have the right to have an opinion, and above all an opinion different from mine ! I do respect it!
And I have no proof it's true myself.
I want you to know that for me it is just a debate, not a fight ! I apologize if i hurt you, I didn't mean too, really. I didn't mean to "attack" or sound harsh. I'm sometime too direct, I know. Sorry!

I was just surprised that Simon answers (true or false) may be considered as fake when there are not from the "conventional" type (LUI is a men's magazine, a bit subversive and with many many naked women in it generally, if you see what I mean... hence this slightly unsual type on interview).
I know it's easy to have preconceptions on the man, I know I might have some too. So mine are different from yours…

Anyway, Tina, It was just a forum discussion. I see you as a very nice person, and not a trouble maker. Feel free to say you don't agree and why. I don't mean to censure anyone. Who am I to do so?

He was saying that he sometimes drinks as many as six drinks a day in the summer. That is really not worrying unless he does it every single week. The Australian goverment's recommendation for men is up to 14 units of alcohol a week, and even if he sometimes gets drunk and has six beers or a bottle of wine, he'd still be within the recommendations.

I think the reason why you feel like that might be due to cultural differences. I come from a similar background as Simon (though I'm not Australian), and where I come from talking about things like sex, drugs, and getting drunk is perfectly natural. Like DS_Pallas said, Simon might be shy or reluctant talking about himself or his background, but he's never been shy talking about sex or other bodily functions. I mean, there's a Land of the Dead promo interview where he quite candidly talks about how he had diarrhea while filming Red Mars...

That is true. And since this is an interview that's been traslated from English to French (and then back to ENglish), so it's quite possible that some details have been lost in translations. However, it is *extremely* unlikely that a magazine such as Lui would make up an interview. They would get into serious trouble for that, and I just cannot imagine a reason to doubt the veracity of the interview as a whole.

Like DS_Pallas said, no-one is angry at you. People are just saying their opinion, just like you are saying yours. Please don't feel lke you're being attacked - thisi s all just a friendly debate.

Being willing to answer these questions surprised me as well but the answers really aren't that outlandish and, for the most part, they do reflect the Simon that we're familiar with. If he had answered the question about how often he has sex, the whole thing would have been suspect for me but he answered that question exactly as I would expect him to answer it - he gave away nothing about his intimate relationship with his wife. Maybe the answer about how much alcohol he drinks every day seemed a bit much to some but I wasn't either surprised or shocked by the answer. For the past 7 years he's been on vacation during the summertime so 6 drinks a day doesn't seem all that excessive to me - it's 3 or 4 beers and a couple of glasses of wine each day. That's what people do when they're on vacation! The rest of the time he said he has 1 drink a day - that's a glass of wine at dinner. No big deal and it doesn't raise any red flags for me that he might have an alcohol problem. As for the drugs, it certainly could be pot or it could be a prescription for either sleep issues or anxiety issues. Shoot, even I would have to answer yes to that question - I have sleep issues and, therefore, have a standing prescription for sleep medication.

And while his answer to the last question continues to make me chuckle, it really is a typical male response to that particular question. While I might not have expected him to go there, he does have a wild child, bad boy element to his personality that occasionally wants to shock us all.

And this is the small missing part of the interview: (in place of the previous [...] here

First thing you take when you wake up?
Water, and then a coffee. Then another coffee.

How many teeth are still yours?
All of them.

On average, how many hours of sleep?
Can't get enough. More than the hours of sleep, it's the quality of sleep that matters to me. If it's good, five hours are enough. It's the assurance of my good mood and my efficiency.

The food you wouldn't be able to live without?
Fish. All fishes. I love it. And avocados on toast.

Are your vaccines up to date?
Er, I don't think so.

OUR DIAGNOSTIC

Pure product of Australian culture, SB likes the great outdoors, surfing, and enjoys drinks with his pals. Neither night owl nor party animal, good family man, straightforward, the Mentalist is clairvoyant on his lifestyle. Concerned about his entourage, he spares himself, as much for him as for his relatives, but does not refrain himself from doing anything. This guy is just healthy: here is a man who puts on sunscreen, swims every day, would damned himself for a grilled fish rather than for caramelized spareribs, and prefers to be in his bed rather than in nightclubs. Under these circumstances, hard to see what could prevent him from making girls melt away and enrage males who will be forever jealous of his success.
