Longines set to sign for top Championships billing

The Championships' showpiece, the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes, is set to join some of the greats of the world's turf by having Longines as a naming-rights sponsor.

Fairfax Media understands a handshake deal has been made by the Australian Turf Club with the Swiss watchmaker and contracts will be inked next month.

Longines has a long association with equine sports and sponsors the Prix De Diane, Kentucky Oaks and Hong Kong International races. It also partners with Royal Ascot, the Dubai World Cup meetings and the Melbourne Cup carnival.

ATC chief executive Darren Pearce would not speculate on any negotiations with the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes, which is one of four races without a sponsor on the second day of The Championships. He would only say that some announcements would be made in the next few weeks.

The Longines deal will be the biggest for a single race in ATC history and would see it became the official timekeeper for Royal Randwick. As part of the deal it is expected Longines ambassadors would attend Randwick for the running of the race on April 19. They include Oscar wining actress Kate Winslet, Australian actor Simon Baker, Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf.

Some of you may already know this. The Baker's friend John Polson is a co-executive producer of the CBS show Elementary. It is a spin-off of Sherlock Holmes! Interesting.

That's an interesting tidbit, Sandra. I wonder if he came to the States before or after the Bakers.

Ah interesting, I knew he'd directed a few episodes of The Mentalist, but I had no idea that he was part of the Elementary team.

By the way, while I was dozing this morning these 3 mucky-faced images drifted into my mind and made me chuckle. He hasn't changed much has he biggrin

A few small glimpses into Simon's past from AusTVWeek:

6th November 1993

Home And Away star Simon Denny — or Simon Baker-Denny as he is to be known now — is set to join the presenting line-up of Ten‘s planned new teen lifestyle show Level 23. Contracts have yet to be signed but Baker-Denny is expected to join the show once his current stint in Home And Away finishes up.
(I suppose it fell through or maybe it was just wrongly reported)

1st January 1994

In Home And Away ...... There is romance between Roxy (Lisa Lackey) and James (Simon Baker-Denny), sparking jealousy from Luke (John Adam).

25th April 1993

Simon heads for Wandin Valley
E Street star Simon Denny had been considering if it was time to move on from the series after one year as Constable Sam Farrell — only to have the decision made for him when the series was axed. The Tasmanian-born former model admits he had considered the move for months before the axe fell. ”My contract was going to be up in August and I had to make a decision and satisfy my practical needs, a regular income and be comfortable, or satisfy my internal desire,” he told TV Week. ”My career wasn’t going to go anywhere if I stayed at E Street for the rest of my life.” But father-to-be Denny will be back on screen sooner rather than later with a guest appearance coming up in A Country Practice, playing the part of 19-year-old mechanic Stewart Waterman.
