Translation to German article in Austrian Tv magazin Posted from DS_Pallas Sorry for mistakes. English isn't my native language
You don't hear Simon Baker's Aussie accent on tv screen. But the smart "Mentalist" can't repudiate in private life that he cames from Down Under. And this is altough he lives about 20 years in LA. A small talk with the 45 years old man who will come back on screen with new TM episodes from Monday. About the show, kids and his marriage secret.
Krone: Can you imagine to have the same job like Patrick Jane? Are you a good watcher and have a good intuition?
SB: I have to be a good watcher as actor or you're otherwise bad. But I don't have the gift that Jane has. I think I'm a good expert in human nature and have a good intuition. But Jane's talent is genius.
Krone: How much influence do you have to scripts, actions and production by TM after the all years?
SB: Oh I had often meetings with producers and studio boss. Those meetings helped much to make the show faster and exciting. And that each and every episodes got strong connection. You'll not find many shows where the only one plot- to catch Red John and to take revenge- was only the one aim about many years. This is scary daring.
Krone: How was your experience with TM untill now? Can you it resume in time lapse?
SB: That are so many ideas which have been realized. It changed my life though this is against my own nature. I fought much against the changes. But what can you do against jobwise, financial and creative changes, especially when these are good? It's good for me. I like challenges and you have many of them when you're working so long time on the same show. You have to stay creative and interesting. Because tv has many limits especially when we're filming so many episodes , now 22 earlier 24 in an year. You're like on 100km/h. Alls flys around you and you have to duck. That all goes very fast. I also met many great people in this show. The co-worker Robin Tunney is my best friend now. We joke often that we'll make ship cruising in out late 60th, will be dour and critical to each other and giving an autographs for 5 Dollar.
Krone: Robin Tunney said that you're like a fresh meat for cougars - for older women who loves younger men.
SB:That's funny. But I'm not so young anymore. She has spured on all crew a time long that I shall give an autograph for her grandmother. Very witty.
Krone: How much are you tired after the filming the complete season?
SB: I need only the change. I told to my wife few days ago that I'll take our boys, rent a van, go to the east coast of Australia and camping, surfing and grilling there.
Krone: Only the boys?
SB: Yes because my daughter studying and I miss her much. But what to do? The kids getting older. But I'm glad that she comes home always gladly. She is studying in Portland, Oregon and it's not so far away. But for us as parents it's always difficult when kids leaving home.
Krone: You're married to Rebecca Rigg who also an actress, since 16 years. That's an eternety in Hollywood. How do you manage that?
SB: Here is no secret. Our marriage has the same ups and downs like every marriage. It's the same work like for people who are not famous. I hate the pressure through idealisation. We have kids, working both and juggling the family like anybody else. The opinion that people in our job getting automatically narcissistic doesn't help. I decided as I was a teenager to be a good human who lives the life so good as possible. But I'm also only a human who loves my family and I don't want to ruin this unity.
