My Translation (didn't check the other ones, maybe they're better)

Simon Baker : When The Mentalist is over, I want to direct movies

Interview: Back from his holidays in Sumatra where he went surfing, The Mentalist hero has started to shoot Season 6. Like Hugh Laurie (Dr House), he’s already thinking about what he will do when the series stops.

You’ve just started to shoot the sixth season of The Mentalist. Has Bruno Heller, the creator of the TV show, given you any clues that it could be the last ?
No, none. You know, it’s rare when a series lasts that long… (in the US, the audience went several times under the threshold of ten million viewers).

But in the USA, several specializing websites announced the departure of Amanda Righetti (Grace Van Pelt) and Owain Yeoman (Wayne Rigsby)…
Really ? All I can say is: wait and see !

In France, the TF1 channel is about to broadcast the 5th season. How would you describe it in a few words to motivate the viewers ?
It cleverly alternates highs and lows to save the suspens. Patrick Jane is getting closer and closer to Red John, the seria killer, to the point he can narrow the list of suspects from four hundred people to… seven names.

An enigma in real Sherlock Holmes style. The Mentalist owes a lot to him ?
Exactly. It’s Bruno idea, who is english. He was inspired by this process, a great classic of the crime fiction.

In a previous interview, you mentionned that « The Mentalist » could move to Paris, as « Dexter » did. Any update?
I’m always encouraging the production, I make such a hullabaloo about it, but it costs a lot of money. Though I think there’s a possibility that we could shoot at least one episode in Paris in 2013 or 2014.

Have you started to imagine your life after « The Mentalist » ?
I want to keep on acting, but I also want to direct movies (he’s already directed several episodes of The Mentalist).

Like « Breath », the adaptation of the Tim Winton’s novel about the world of surfing ?
Yes, I think about it more and more (he has acquired the adaptation rights). On the other hand, I don’t think I can play in it, like I planned it at the beginning. I want to focus on the directing part.

And your project about the remake of « L’Héritier » (The Inheritor, 1973) with Jean-Paul Belmondo ?

I think about it. I believe the storyline need to be dust a bit, and need to have a more international framework. Same thing with « L’homme pressé » (Man in a Hurry, 1978) with Alain Delon, one of my favourite movies. It’s exactly the kind of things I’d like to produce or direct.

You’re back from a surf trip in Sumatra, in the North of Indonesia. What does excite you the most in this activity?
When I do it, I leave without my wife and children, only with mates that knew me way before I hit success with The Mentalist. They tease me, I tease them… What I look for in surf, it’s the feeling of being even more alive. Waves don’t care if I am a star on not. They simply smash me and bring me down, as with all my buddies, if I happen to believe I’m stronger than nature.

You came in Hollywood with a bunch of other Australians actors, who all have achieved a great success today. Is there a « Kangaroo mafia »?
No. It’s just that we come from a small country and we are hard workers. Nothing more. I swear there is not any secret ritual between us!

Your fellow countryman Hugh Jackman plays Wolverine. What superhero would you like to be ?
(He laughs) Aquaman, of course!

When the TV series « House » came to an end, Hugh Laurie converted into an unexpected carreer as a bluesman. Do you have a hidden passion you cultivate secretly?
I make photos. Portraits, or living moments captured, in the spirit of - relatively speaking - Henri Cartier-Bresson or Mary Ellen Mark. One day, I’d like to exhibit them. We’ll see.

I think it's probably taken too long to get off the ground and he may feel that he is now too old for the part. sad sad

Was so looking forward to seeing him in Breath. Do hope he's not going to disappear completely behind the camera when TM ends and we never see him again.

No, I don't think. I'm sure he will be offered some interesting roles…

Many thanks DS_Pallas , you have excellent translation skills, helped I think by your very good knowledge of Simon. The only thing I'd query is the comment that Simon will focus on the directing part of Breath - we know that in January (at the "Meet the 'I Give It A Year' Filmmakers" event in London) he told us that Australian Director Glendyn Ivin was on board. Of course, the situation may have changed since then, but as Simon has a Producer role on this project, is there any possibility that he meant he would focus on producing rather than directing?

I'm very disappointed that he feels he can't play the role of Sando in Breath, as I've really been looking forward to that. But on a more positive note, I hope he exhibits his photos one day, as I'd love to see them.

Yes, interesting point Fran, but Simon's answer about Breath is really "me concentrer sur la réalisation" wich means "focus on the directing". Maybe things have changed, as he doesn't consider the role of Sando for him anymore?

I hope it's not true that he won't play Sando. I've pictured him so much in this that I'm not sure I want to see the
movie with somebody else. And I really hope he will still be acting and maybe direct the same time. Would be too
sad to see him disappear behind the camera.

much thanks for the translation, DS--as distressing as it is contemplating him disappearing behind the camera. All we can do now is hope that the shake ups of season 6 will fuel enough interest to demand a season 7 and hope that the Leo in him compels him to stay in the public spotlight in some way.

I doubt that he will quit acting altogether, however directing is always such an adventure for him that he will continue to do it as long as there are some good prospects out there. I'm really sorry about Breath since Sando was a role meant for him, perhaps he will pull a George Clooney and both direct and star in the project.
