Téléstar.fr : How did the shooting of The Mentalist go for you?
Emmanuelle Chriqui : It was one of the best experiences of my career because I had the opportunity to play a very different character from anything I had done so far. She's a mysterious girl and a calculating person, who keeps her cards close to her chest.
You knew Simon Baker?
EC: Yes , we made a short film together called Woman in Trouble, in which we shared a scene. But I 've always been a big fan. I find him very talented, he's great.
What man did you really discover while working with him ?
EC: He is very serious about his work, but he is also funny and shows great kindness. I really learned from working with him. He especially showed me how to remain relaxed while acting.
Lorelei is a complex character. How long did it take you to understand her true intentions?
EC: Week after week, I discovered the scenarios and really, I was surprised. Their relationship was very confusing. It began with a manipulative play until a true affection was born.
Right, and you have a nude scene. Wasn't it too complicated to play?
EC: I wasn't intimidated because Simon has quickly put me at ease. The whole team was also really friendly from the very start. It was not so obvious, since I joined for the last episode of the fourth season, which was a very important one.
This scene caused quite a sensation in the United States, especially as it was directed by Simon Baker...
E.C. : Simon and I talked a lot about it. I was shooting in North Carolina when he texted me, asking me: "Would you be comfortable in an icy ocean, amidst the waves and topless?" I answered "yes", while knowing that it was for a national TV channel. I knew people were going to see me from the back and nothing more! And frankly, we spent a wonderful day shooting this beautiful scene. We discover Lorelei from another angle, vulnerable and free. She just gets out of jail... Well, anyhow Simon has received a note from the direction of the channel: "We can see a part of her breasts." Eventually they ended up dropping it... (smile)
Some in the series knew the identity of Red John (revealed since then in the US). And you ?
E.C. : Not at all. I asked Bruno (Heller, creator of the show) and he did not answer me!
A word about your relationship with Robin Tunney (Teresa Lisbon). Did you get on well?
EC: She is among the ones who gave me the warmest welcome. She is very classy. And she was delighted by the presence of Lorelei because it alters the relationship between Jane and Lisbon. She found it very exhilarating. So she was adorable, which is not always obvious. Actresses are sometimes quite aggressive between them.
One final thing, let's evoke a city you know well, Paris...
EC : Yes, I spent two months there to make a film with Manu Payet (Situation amoureuse : C’est compliqué, in theaters March 19, 2014, ed. note). More than Paris, I'll tell you about him: I do not have enough words to say how a great man, a great actor and a great director he is. This remains one of the best experiences of my career, with The Mentalist. |

In the UK "The Affair of the Necklace" the romantic drama with Simon and Hilary Swank is on ITV on Boxing Day. Unfortunately it's on between 12.20 a.m. and 2.20 a.m. if anyone is still partying and still awake! |
