9 days on set is a lot, considering they usually shoot an episode in 8 days. It seems to me that Dove's character must have a lot of screen time, and that its important for her to have a strong on-screen connection with Patrick. I think that by establishing such a fun off-screen relationship, Simon has helped to ensure a very good performance from Dove, so that the connection will shine through and her character's relationship with Patrick will feel special.

I thought the same Fran....9 days is a long time. She says she is on screen with Robin and Simon a lot so can't wait to see what enfolds!! She seems a very likeable and confident young girl. biggrin

Excerpt from Dove Cameron's "Dear Diary: 8/18/2012" on Tumblr http://dovelyy.tumblr.com/

I’m going to miss Simon and Robin so much. There are a few people in your life, and there will only be a few, who just know you. They see you for what you are. You meet them, and you know exactly who they are, and they know you. That instantaneous comfortability. That is the main deciding factor in casting rooms. When people connect, you can see it on screen. The camera picks up the emotion, if it’s palpable. The two people fit together, cut from the same crop. I learned so much from them, and I couldn’t exactly tell you what it was that I learned, and I’m not sure I would want to be able to articulate it. I feel that it might lose it’s magic. I still don’t feel like I got enough time with them, but I have a strange feeling that we’ll work with each other again in the future.

When I hear what a lovely caring person Simon is I can understand how he found the Nick Fallin character so draining over the three years that he did it. I still loved Simon in TG more than I did the actual series if that makes sense.

Dove Cameron seems to be a lovely young woman with wisdom and writing abilities beyond her 16 years. I hope she matures into a stable adult without all the accoutrement of the Hollywood scene, just as Simon and his wife seem to be able to avoid and remain grounded in what means the most to them.

I agree Sylvia. I hope she has a good support system at home like Madison last season did. They were both charming young women with bright futures. But it's easy for a girl (especially one as strikingly beautiful as Dove) to be swallowed up by Hollywood. Crossing my fingers that things work out well for her. I have a feeling she made more than one friend on the Mentalist set that may keep an eye on her. smile

Dave Appelbaum on the twitter this week. Good morning all!

Busy day here at the office. Start prep on my episode today. #episode505

Hard at work on revisions to the script. If anyone has questions about the preparation process to shoot an episode, lemme know!

#episode505 is actually a kidnapping episode. Lots of twists and turns. It's called "Cherry Picked"

By the time the first episode airs, we will have shot the first seven episodes of the season.

Reply to 'Do you think of places you can film at first or hope to find places that work after the script is finished?' - That depends. Typically you just write the script that's in your head and hope to find locations later.

Each episode takes 8 days to shoot.

Reply to 'do you decide on what happens in 1 ep together and one person writes it or does one write+later all talk?' - We are very collaborative. But the majority of the ideas usually come from the writer of that episode.

Reply to 'How far in advance do the actors see the script?' - They usually get the script a week or so before it begins shooting.

Reply to 'who normally requests revisions? Cast? Director? producer? Writer?' - All of the above. The script often keeps changing and getting better up until the moment you shoot it.

We usually use 2 cameras in every scene. But big action scenes sometimes require more cameras.

Inspiration comes from everywhere. Other TV shows, movies, real life cases. We're always looking around for a new idea.

Working hard on more revisions to the script... Looking forward to casting the episode tomorrow.

Reply to 'how does the casting process work? Does it last just a day or more? - We usually have 2-3 sessions, which last 3 hours each. Depends on how many parts there are for the episode.

Writers are hard at work here. Got different people writing episodes 5 through 11, at varying stages of development.

Reply to 'do you ever change the order of the episodes?' - That has happened a few times, yes.
