I've seen suggestions that Patrick will get off on 'self defence' but I don't think that's possible. RJ
wasn't pointing his gun at him. And he had been walking away until Patrick asked him to stop.

'Temporary insanity' or whatever the correct term is nowadays would be possible as long as Patrick
can prove what RJ said to him.

A recording device on his person perhaps?

I guess my musings belong on another thread.

Back to the episode.......................

Was it on this thread that someone questioned the sense of waiting until the assassin
had opened the external doors before Cho and Rigsby ran in? That seemed a bit odd.

I wonder why RJ was going to 'give up' - if indeed he really was.

The reference to children was sinister I thought.

Thank goodness we only have to wait until the Autumn (hopefully?) for Season 4.

What can i say. What a rollercoaster ride of twists and turns. Think o'laughlin was the obvious choice for mole. But what is in the tupperware. By the look on laroche face i got the impression it was something really gross. Afraid find out what. But loved how grace and hightower with no hesitation just shot o'laughlin. Good on grace for not pondering. Poor lisbon had a rough ride with the bomb and now getting shot. But the silence on phone when jane thought she was dead. Marvelous moment. But the end i never saw coming. But if i was jane and i heard those words about my daughter i think i too would have done the same. It looked like jane was not going to do what he always said he would and it was almost like thats what rj was playing for. Which makes me wonder is it rj. Was this person here solely to get jane to kill in cold blood and become exactly like rj. This is his way of breaking him completely. This is the basis for s4 and what happens to him and how he can live with what he's done. We shall see. But as heller said 'all is not what it seems'. But i for one have no idea how this is going to play out. Which is why it was one of the greatest finales of any show i've ever seen. Some are comparing it to 'who shot jr' in dallas. This was by far superior.

Well, I’ve watched the whole 2 hours again, and I still found it riveting even though I knew what was going to happen. eek

I forgot to mention about Ep 23, did everyone recognise Karl Sonnenberg escorting the guy to the car at the garage, just before Laroche shot him?

Back to Ep 24 though. I thought the writing, direction and acting was spot on. Even the editing, which can sometimes be a bit of a weakness, looked good to me. I particularly enjoyed the scenes with Patrick and Laroche – I really hope that Pruitt Taylor Vince will be back next season, he and Simon work so well together. I thought the hotel room gambit was a clever idea, although maybe the rope seemed a bit obvious – but if it had been obvious to them we wouldn’t have had the great twists and turns and some great action scenes.

I thought the Craig confrontation scene was brilliantly done – yes Angie, it was great the way Grace as well as Hightower shot him without hesitation. But like Jude, I felt bad for Lisbon when neither Hightower or Grace checked that she was OK – surely one of them should have done. I suppose this was so that we could have those moments with Patrick on the phone with Lisbon – and I agree Angie, what wonderful moments they were.

As for the Red John showdown – I thought it was perfection. I read someone describe Bradley Whitford’s portrayal as ‘delicious’ which I agree with, and I loved the stillness of Patrick in contrast. I also read a comment that Simon showed ‘great depth of emotion without emoting’. How true that is, I thought his performance in those final scenes was absolutely stunning.

If it had been possible, I would have loved to see the finale without knowing that Patrick shot RJ. Because I’m sure I would have felt that Patrick had fallen apart and wouldn’t be able to do it, so the shock of what actually happened would have been far greater, and I’m sure it would have taken my breath away.

that final twist left me questioning my own balance of light and darkness. Do morality and ethics really fly out of the window when our emotions bubble over. When the episode finished, I wasn't sure if I'd been drawn in by the very convincing feeling of justice for retribution that the writer made me feel in the last episode (particularly when RJ described the scent of Jane's wife and daughter before they died), or bit by bit, over the 3 seasons by a smooth talking, humorously engaging obsessional personality. Whatever the reason, I was there at the end, with the rest of the Mentalist following, heart in mouth, feeling that what he'd done was oh so right, but oh so wrong

I find this so interesting. I think part of Bruno’s and Simon’s brilliance is that they will have made many of the law-abiding people watching want to see Patrick kill RJ and feel pleased that he had done so. And then many of those people would have sat back and wondered about their own morality and sense of justice. I think its very rare for an entertaining, popular programme to challenge the audience in this way – with such a broad audience its a risk, so I think it was very brave of them.

I’ve started a separate thread on this. I think bearing in mind Bruno's subversive sense of humour it will be something amusing, so I’m hoping to get some fun suggestions.

I finally got round to reading this review of the Finale from Daemons TV, and I enjoyed it. So I thought I'd post it here for anyone who hasn't read it yet:
