Interview with Plotnick: http://www.tvequals.com/2013....t-flies
Exclusive Interview: The Mentalist’s Jack Plotnick Talks Playing Brett Partridge, Being A Red John Suspect & Flies
The Mentalist season 6 is slated to premiere this coming Sunday and if you know anything about yours truly, I am VERY excited to see how it will pan out especially since we know that the Red John saga is coming to an end.
With so many exciting news & spoilers coming out, we are very fortunate here at TV Equals to have gotten the fantastic honor and opportunity to chat with someone who knows a little bit about what is coming this season, Jack Plotnick who plays Brett Partridge, one of the Red John suspects.
In our chat, Jack talked about been playing Brett Partridge since the pilot episode, working on the season 6 premiere and more. Check out what he had to say below and don’t miss him in the season 6 premiere episode of The Mentalist this Sunday September 29 at 10 pm on CBS.
I’m such a fan of your character. Isn’t this an exciting season?
Jack Plotnick: I’ll say, definitely very exciting.
You’ve been with this show from the pilot onward. What’s that adventure been like for you?
Jack Plotnick: Well it was really cool to have been part of the pilot because I was there when all those actors were just meeting each other, and actually because I was in the pilot episode, I even went with them to meet an actual, I think he was, an FBI agent to discuss how they do what they do. I really felt like I was part of the family because I was there when they were all just meeting each other, getting to know each other. That feeling really continued every time I would go to the set. Everybody remembered me and welcomed me in a really warm fashion. So it’s always been a wonderful place to return to, and I have some really wonderful memories along the way. It’s been fun to get to each appearance to learn more and more about my character and have him go from just getting to know him better…and yeah.
How did you react when you found out that your character was going to be on the list of seven suspects?
Jack Plotnick: I was incredibly excited. I had heard a rumor that it was possible, and I just thought that was wonderful and couldn’t wait to find out if it was really going to happen or not, and then when I found out it was happening, it was just so cool. It was really exciting. I love the way that it was presented on the episode. I think the way those pictures come down like that was so cool, and getting to be the last photo was especially chilling. So that was a lot of fun.
Let’s say you turn out to be Red John, is there something about your character that you would’ve liked to incorporate from the get go, or are you fine with not having known the whole time?
Jack Plotnick: Well, I played it like I was Red John from the beginning.
You’re actually in the premiere episode of season six. What can you tease about that episode? There’s a photo that’s out where you’re with Jane and Lisbon on a beach.
Jack Plotnick: That beach was next to the Salton Sea. There was a tremendous amount of flies in the air. So what I recommend watching is how many times the flies actually land on our faces while we’re trying to act. It was really one of the most difficult things I’ve had to deal with as an actor, staying in character while flies land on your face. It was incredible because when we would sit down, I remember I saw Robin [Tunney], she was sitting there and there were like sixteen flies on her leg and there’s nothing you can do about it. Simon [Baker] came over and just swatted them away, but ten seconds later they’re right back again. What I loved is that Simon and Robin had such a wonderful sense of humor about it. They’re such good sports, and nobody ever got upset. Simon certainly teased the location manager about it because on top of the flies, the smell was just excruciatingly terrible.
The Mentalist Season 6 Premiere The Desert Rose (3)
Is there a difference in how you approach Brett Partridge now as compared to the beginning?
Jack Plotnick: No. I always approached it like Red John because that seemed appropriate.
The character has always been super specific, to the point that Patrick Jane was irked by him from the get go. Was that in the script, or did you add that in?
Jack Plotnick: The creepiness was in the script. However, in the pilot, Simon adlibbed an extra line and it’s been a while since I’ve watched that scene, but that final line where he says – shoot – on his exit, he added an You’re ghoulish.’ He says, ‘You’re ghoul,’ and then he said something else. The point is that he added and he definitely really enjoyed that aspect and played it up even more. But it was written in the script. That’s kind of what they wanted from the character, the idea that he’s a little too into the…he’s always been ultra fascinated by the different acts that Red John does and by the violence. It doesn’t even matter if it’s Red John. I think he just seems a little too into gore.
What can you tease beyond the premiere for this season for your character this season?
Jack Plotnick: I’ve been very busy and we all worked really hard to make this season awesome and exciting, and that I can’t wait for the audience to see it. I can’t really say anything past that.
Do you have any other upcoming projects you can talk about?
Jack Plotnick: Oh, yes. I directed a feature film called ‘Space Station 76‘ that stars Patrick Wilson, Liv Tyler and Matt Bomer and Jerry O’Connell. We hope that will be in festivals and theaters next year. It takes place in the future as we had imagined it in the 1970′s and it’s a dark comedy, and it’s sort of like ‘Space 1999′ meets ‘The Brady Bunch’ in space.
That’s been a big part of my life in the last year, and also a musical I co-wrote called ‘Disaster!’ It’s going to be premiering off Broadway next month and people in New York can see that. It’s a 1970′s disaster movie musical with all hit songs from the ’70′s. They can find that on Facebook. The website is disastermusical.com and I’m really, really proud of that. That’s premiering in October.
If you could guest star on any TV show, which one would it be?
Jack Plotnick: Oh, gosh, well for me there’s no question. For me it has to be ‘The Love Boat.’ I’ve got to be on ‘The Love Boat.’ I’ve got to walk in front of the blue screen and go up on the deck with that blue screen and sky, and I was to have a drink with Gofer. I want to sit at the captain’s table. I want my character and Julie to have some torrid affair. Yeah, that’s what it’s going to be.

Okay, so Jack Plotnick appears to really love the 70s!!!
Not the best interview in the world and it leaves me a little perplexed. He seems to contradict himself (if indeed those are his words...I never really trust written interviews! ) One minute he is excited at the prospect of being a suspect and gives the impression he didn't know....the next, he's saying he played it as if if he was RJ from the start.... If he didn't know, why on earth would he assume that his character...a forensic tech who works for the police....should pretend that he is a killer? Could be a deliberate attempt to get people assuming about him, or it could be a colossal gaff on his part - the jury's still out. But I still believe Partridge is RJ.
Thanks for sharing 258pce. |

Malcolm McDowell also said that he thought that he was RJ. Maybe Bruno told all the potential suspects to play their part as if they were RJ. |

Thanks 258pce, I thought there were some interesting things in this interview. I'm wondering about Simon's adlib, could it have been the now famous 'he irks me, he's irksome' comment. Also like the comment about Simon teasing the location manager about Salton Sea. I'm not sure about Plotnick's playing it as Red John comment, as he said the creepiness was in the script, but he could well have had extra direction from Bruno. |

@Fran, I LOVE the ''irks me line, and use it a lot!! And I agree about the extra direction from Bruno, I wondered that, I think that this has all played out exactly as Bruno intended, he has been laying foundations for this season right from the start, everything has gone very slowly and sort of evolved......I bet he has most of the names on that list in his head from the start.....certainly the two Bretts. |

I knew TM was a hit when Charlie Sheen, then at the top of his game on Two and A Half Men, used the line, 'He irks me, he's irksome.' |

Robin Tunney interview (French): http://seriesaddict.fr/news....list%29 (Reads like a conglomeration of other interviews)
google translation: It is this Sunday that CBS launches the season 6 of The Mentalist. Robin Tunney, aka Lisbon, elaborated on the future of the series and whats after The Mentalist. Discover right now her interview!
According to you, is a love story between Lisbon and Jane possible? I think that there is already a love story, even if it is only platonic. There is a part of me that thinks that it would be very nice if nothing was happening between them but on the other hand, I think that after all these years, I embrace it! But at this point, it would be like kissing my brother!
Each episode, Lisbon and her team must deal with the dead. This "darkness", do you mind it? I have the impression that our series is less graphic than others, I do not think that Bruno Heller and producers like necessarily show gore. I am not very comfortable with violence. The darkness of the series is sometimes hard, and dealing with corpses every week is. Having a weapon is also difficult for me because it frightens me and one of the hardest things for me is to appear powerful while I am afraid!
Do you think The Mentalist can continue once you've finished chasing Red John? It is a question that everyone is asking. But I think that viewers love to see Jane solve murders, with his own way of seeing things. It's entertaining to watch. After catching Red John, it is not known if Jane will remain in the CBI. The fact is that he has not much to do, he is lonely and the CBI has become like a family to him. Everything will depend on the fans, but in any case, Simon and I have signed for a seventh season...
Do you know the identity of Red John? My parents don't believe me when I always tell them that I do not know who is Red John! I have absolutely no idea! I just hope that this is not me! [Laughs]
But do you have a theory? I do not really know who he is. It will be a surprise for me to discover. I do not know if we will know it in the very last episode but I think that if people continue to cling to this storyline, this is because Red John is much more than a person. He has become a force, enigmatic on certain points. As I said earlier, I do not think that the revelation of his identity is the only reason why people watch the show. They love to watch Simon each week. He is someone who is very charismatic, with super hair! [Laughs]
Can you just tell us about your relationship with Simon Baker? Simon is like a brother, he makes my job so easy. I appreciate having him beside me, he's made me a better actress and teaches me many things. He takes an important role in my life. He nicknamed me his "TV Wife"! I do not need to pretend with him, I look and it is real. When you are on TV for so long, it's nice to no longer have to act. He makes it all easy, he is a very good actor. He is so good, day after day. I joke with him saying that Australian actors have extra chromosomes because he's never ill, is never tired and never complains. The days I want to complain, he's told me that I can not. There so many dialogues to learn and he is always good. He is really awesome.
Have you ever considered moving to directing? Bruno Heller, creator of the series, has already suggested to me. To be honest, I feel really overwhelmed by the amount of work that I currently have. But I think that I will be too afraid. Is a very difficult job. You must answer the questions from all over the world, even when you do not have the answer. It asks too much responsibility and I think that I would feel too overwhelmed.
How do you feel about the idea of ending the role of Lisbon? Very contrasted. I feel very sad when it will be finished, because with Simon and the rest of the team, it has become like a family. This job has been wonderful, I have learned so much. I have fun playing Lisbon but the idea of doing something new and different is both exciting and scary! Saying goodbye to this important part of my life, which has lasted longer that high school or College, will make me very sad. But I be able to sleep and I'll be relieved... But at the same time, I am concerned because before the show, I played only six months in the year, sometimes four. I was traveling, I had hobbies but now I'm used to being always busy. I'm afraid I'll become anxious if I have nothing to do. Being in a series, it's like being in prison: you have someone behind you telling you what time you get up, how to dress, what to say, when to eat... You have no decisions to make, it's like being institutionalized nine months in the year. When it ends, I'll have to take care of myself, I'll be asking myself "what do I say, where do I put?" I do not remember taking these kinds of decision! "." [Laughs] Find me another series, I am completely lost!
A quick note about your experience in Prison Break? I really loved Wentworth Miller. He is a very good actor, a type super and very special. I loved going to meet him and spend time with him. On the other hand, I hated working in the prison. When I was in a cell, I had a bad feeling, this mixture of sadness and regret... I felt that people were feeling. Prison Break was a really different series to The Mentalist, where every detail is extremely important. How to act is so different and the voltage is not the same. But I really enjoyed this experience. |

4Oct13 warnerbrostv - Is The Mentalist trying to tell us something? http://instagram.com/p/fECIfYNWtE/#
http://insidetv.ew.com/2013/10/04/the-mentalist-poster-exclusive/ Things got bloody in the season premiere of The Mentalist – and as executive producer Bruno Heller told us after the episode, there’s more death to come.
That also seems to be the message in this new poster for the series, which debuts today here on EW. A 23-feet-tall version alongside the Warner Bros. building in Burbank, Calif. starting today. The billboard is one of four that will be released to gear up for the reveal of Patrick Jane’s nemesis. |

A nice little glimpse of Simon Baker as a director
From William Mapother BLOG: (In the ep. directed by Baker, "BLINKING RED LIGHT", Mapother plays Richard Haibach, an amateur photographer living in San Francisco. He was arrested in connection with the San Joaquin Killer investigation, but released due to lack of evidence).
I’m Thinking of… Posted on: October 5th, 2011 by wmapother
If player-coaches have a tough time, imagine actor-directors. Now imagine actor-directors directing their old friends. Now imagine actor-directors directing their old friends named William Mapother. Now go get a drink. I just did.
Fortunately, this bad sort of drama was in absence last week on the set of The Mentalist. I shot an ep — Blinking Red Light –directed by the star Aussie with blinding smile, Simon Baker, whom I’ve known for longer than either of us care to recall, and Simon was as fun, calm and crafty as you’d expect. My scenes were with the copacetic Robin Tunney, whom I know from The Zodiak.
Being an actor: Bad – waiting for work. Good – making lots of friends, running into them unexpectedly, and working with them when the stars align. |
