@June - The Mirror would be a tabloid paper so is not really considered a serious paper (compared to a broadsheet newspaper) but would have a big readership so a good review here should go along way!

Quote (June)
They are complemented by Rafe Spall, who is settling nicely into leading-man duties, with The Mentalist star Simon Baker providing classic sophisticated good looks.

Awhhh c'mon. Simon is wayyyyyyyyy better than just being the token good-looking guy. I know The Mirror isn't especially sophisticated but surely they know talent when they see it. Simon (as we all know)is an extremely talented actor who was even generous enough to help out the first-time writer/director with some of his shots. I think the paper is being a bit on the unfair side to downplay his contribution. Grrrrrrr! angry Tabloids!! Sorry for the rant guys - just irritates!

Grrr, to the tabloids, always. In some ways I think Baker's good looks have kept his acting talent from being fully appreciated by the general public.

I agree Hayseed but it may depend on the role in the movie. There is no denying in the Mentalist and the Guardian how an amazing actor he is. Whereas Devil Wears Prada he was was just limited to the pretty boy tag. I hope he gets to shine in the movie but won't be surpised if its edited in a way to play on the good looks

Read in a mag that the backer for IGIAY is French and was particularly keen for Simon to be cast as TM is so popular in France.

Tassie, that's very interesting, where did you read that?

Added later - I just watched Film 2013's review, and was a bit disappointed because Simon wasn't mentioned at all (neither was Anna Faris). Claudia Winkleman couldn't say much because her husband (Kris Thykier) was a Producer on the film, so that's probably how she knows Simon.

Simon always seems to be overlooked, as if he's an also ran. I really don't understand UK TV interviewers. cry

Fran, I think it was in Heat magazine that I read about French backer. It was a little snippet on a photo. I'm ashamed to admit it, but I was rifling through mags on the shelf in Asda looking for any info about you-know-who, of course I didn't buy any so that's why I'm not completely sure which one it was.javascript://

Thanks Tassie, I might find time to rifle through a few celeb mags myself (I wouldn't buy them either) biggrin

As this is on general UK release today, I thought I'd just say that obviously comments by people who have seen the film are very welcome, but please can you use spoiler tags for any parts of your comment that reveal information that will spoil it for people who haven't yet seen it. The easiest way to do this is to highlight the relevant text and click where it says spoiler at the top of the reply box. Thanks.

Oh dear, first reviews seen are not good. Infantile being one of the words used. Still it might be a hit. The script, direction and editing were particularly picked on. This in the Daily Mail. sad

Just back from seeing IGIAY. There are some very funny laugh out loud moments, but I found other parts a bit bland. Of course that could be because I was waiting for Simon to light up the screen-and he certainly does. He looks gorgeous, and has his share of funny lines. I only wish he could get a role where his acting talent could shine. There were 10 people in the cinema-2 older than me(surprising) 6 younger and 1 man. Everyone seemed to enjoy it, judging by the laughter. I admit that I only went to see it because Simon was in it and I couldn't warm to Rose Byrne at all. It will be interesting to see what other Simon friends make of it.

Juney - I've read lots of reviews and they're mixed, some good some bad, I think that's pretty normal.

I've also just got back from seeing it and I agree with you Tassie that Simon lights up the screen (of course that may just be bias biggrin ). I particularly loved his first speaking scene and wished I could rewind it to watch again (so am already looking forward to getting it on DVD).

Overall I enjoyed the film and found it entertaining - I will definitely be going to see it again. There were a few non-Simon scenes which I felt were a bit self-indulgent and lasted too long so the joke got tired, but these were probably the ones where the humour was not to my taste. There is some crude humour, some of it funny, but for me it didn't dominate the film, and there were plenty of other humorous scenes which may not have been laugh out loud, but where I was chuckling to myself.

Once again Simon doesn't disappoint, I thought his performance was excellent showing greater subtlety and nuance than most of the other actors, who I also thought did a good job but in my eyes none of them were standout brilliant.
