Tassie and Fran Thanks for giving us a first impression of the film and especially the performance of Simon.
I think I have already formed an opinion of what we can expect.
I'm glad to hear that Simon's performance is perfect. I always think he's an underrated player.
Cant wait to see the film in Spain.

Just got back from seeing IGIAY. Well - I have to say I agree with Tassie and Fran, mostly. There were some laugh out loud moments, especially with Simon and the doves but overall I was a bit disappointed. If I'm honest, I don't think the script was up to par (but then I didn't like Four Weddings and a Funeral) I just don't think it displays the true British sense of humour ( even though I know Simon has mentioned that that's what it is). Yes there were chuckles but, for me anyways, there was too much indulgent crudity - and I'm not a prude by any chalk of the imagination.

The thing was, I took my mum with me, so there were a couple of uncomfortable moments. We both agreed, however, that really Simon was the best thing in it ( and my mum doesn't even watch The Mentalist!). His acting outshone all the others by far - you could tell he was a true professional and was comfortable in doing it. Some of the others, I felt, seemed as thought they were trying too hard.

I know I'm biased, but I think he kind of stole the show! He looks very good on the big screen and especially yummy in navy blue. There is a scene, ladies, when he is in his navy coat, which involves an intercom buzzer that I know I won't be forgetting for a while!! tongue (you know what I'm talking about, Fran! tongue )

Overall, yes I'll probably buy the DVD but I'll be skipping to Simon's scenes only and not really watching the rest of it again. That said, it will probably be a reasonable hit due to the Working Title/Studio Canal connections and the positive marketing strategies they have going on. Just hope it gives Simon the opportunity to play lead in future films (I'm writing one but it may take a while!!!) and that it makes all those writers, directors and production companies sit up and take notice of his impeccable talent.

Well I too have just come back from seeing IGIAY and have to say that although I enjoyed it I really thought there would be more laughs. Having said that there were quite a few chuckly moments and the rest of the auudience seemed to find it funny. Simon played his part perfectly and looked gorgeous and I too think he stole the show. I couldn't really find myself having much sympathy or even interest in either Rafe Spalls character or Rose Byrne's,but I thought Anna Faris was cute and funny and you could take more of a shine to her than Rose Byrne. Perhaps Simon and Anna should have had the starring roles instead? who knows.

Will definitely buy the DVD and look forward to that. In the meantime lets hope everybody else can see what
a versatile and talented actor Simon is and this film really raises his profile over here. And AgentM yes the
intercom scene!! got to see that again biggrin

I've known Anna Faris for quite some time and she is a very funny young woman who seems to be always cast in some quasi-sexual situation. She did play against Simon before. Rose Byrne, fellow Aussie is an accomplished actress who was probably miscast in this comedy. She recently completed a short series on Cable television on which she showed her actings skills very well against a seasoned cast. I'm looking forward to seeing IGIAY here in California soon. I know Simon wont disappoint me, but I know that Maser always does.

I knew this is not my kind of movie, but I'm so much looking forward to see it, just for Simon. Any info about the DVD release? I guess it will come out in the UK first, so I just signed up at amazon to be informed when it's available. Maybe it comes out before it starts in Germany ...I hope so.

I've been thinking about why Simon was like a breath of fresh air to me in this movie, and I've come to the conclusion that he was the only one with CHARISMA. Whilst I thought the other leads were competent, I don't think any of them had any charisma - that quality that draws your eye and makes you want to watch them.

I'd be surprised if the film is a massive hit, but I think it will do fairly well because some of the humour will appeal to young men, so they won't mind taking their girlfriends to see it - in other words, Mazer has made a rom-com that is not just a chick-flick.

Sylvia - I didn't think Simon had been in anything else with Anna Faris - when was that?

Tina - as the film's only just been released to cinemas, I think the DVD will be a while yet, unless it completely fails and has to go straight to DVD.

I totally agree, Fran. You could definitely see that about him. It was also highly evident that his experience and ability as an actor clearly outdid every other actor in the piece - he was the acting expert in the room whilst the others (although competent and reasonable actors in their own right) seemed, to me, as if they were
somehow still in the developing newbie stages. Hope that doesn't sound too harsh, having a hard time trying to define what I mean! It just seemed that Simon's experience shone through, making it look so easy and natural. He put the 'twinkle' into the whole movie. wink

I agree again. I think there is more of the Borat humour in it than the Love Actually (which I did like!) ergo it will satisfy the sometimes infantile humour that so many of the male species seem to like - my brother being the perfect example (who are hysterical at films like American Pie, 40 year old virgin and those of a similar ilk) Or maybe I'm just too old to appreciate that kind of humour!! dry

As for DVD release, it usually takes about 6-8 months after cinematic release before they put it on the market. So we're probably looking at a July/August release date for DVD. Possibly even Sept in time for those cold evenings in! smile

You're right Fran, I was thinking of Sunset Strip which he did with Anna Friel. Good music for those of us who were in that scene on the strip. Great trip down memory lane, funky clothes and even funkier dreamscapes remembered for all of us who have sobered up and faced the real world. Years later I was at the Wiskey and the Improv with my son and the moment was surreal. Anyone else remember those years?

The comments here about Simon's great acting reminded me of my reaction to him in Devil Wears Prada. I didn't know him then, but I remember thinking he was a really good actor, and thinking what a pity that he was older, so would not have a major break out role (silly me!!)

To be quite honest I think I am a bit of a prude. I really can't see why comedy has to be crude and obscene nowadays. I am also not much of a movie goer, but will probably buy the DVD and flip through the bits I don't want to see (all the scenes that Simon aren't in naturally). As has been mentioned the reviews have been very mixed and Simon hasn't been mentioned in most of them when he seems to have been the star of the film, in our opinions anyway.

Finally saw the movie just now. Seems only to have limited distribution in Ireland as only two cinemas in my city carried it. I actually did really enjoy it. Simon looked amazing and really was the best thing in it. Easily outshined everybody else. Cinema did have a good turn out in it so glad people although not in every cinema it was doing well in the one I was in.

UK Box Office performance so far - pretty good up

Excerpt:
The week’s second highest new entry belonged to StudioCanal’s I Give It A Year which delivered an impressive debut to chart third in a crowded field. (Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph, which debuted with $7.1m (£4.5m) took top spot)

Dan Mazer’s directorial debut laughed its way to a non-final $2.4m (£1.5m) from 397 sites and is now set for a strong first week thanks to positive reviews and Valentine’s Day falling on Thursday.

In terms of recent romantic comedies, I Give It A Year topped the openings of the likes of The Five-Year Engagement ($1.7m/£1.1m from 457) and What To Expect When You’re Expecting ($1m/£661,617 from 416), as well as already surpassing the entire UK run of the recent British effort The Wedding Video ($1.7m/£1.1m).
