4.20 Something"s Rotten in Redmond

I have just watch this (3 rimes) and I thought it was an extremely good episode - very well written. each time i picked up more of the subtleties of the dialogue. the range of acting skills Simon displayed was impressive - I mean reciting Shakespeare while fencing! The scene in the Principals office was priceless - his face shows 1000 words. There seemed to be a closeness between him and Lisbon as well this week. Also I thought that when he and VP were looking at the video footage, on the sofa there was friendship and warmth but he was just far enough away not to be too close - they looked very comfortable in terms of 2 colleagues whereas in the past she has always been a bit wary of him I think. It would be lovely to see Jillian and the baby in real life as well...... happy

I thought the Van Pelt/Jane bit on the sofa was cute too. It was so nice to see sweet pre-Craig Grace come out. She was so good with that girl the way she used to be and so genuinely happy for Rigsby. And Lisbon/Jane were just hysterical together, alot of their old non-verbal communications are back, like the scene before the play began. And closed case pizza. Very impressed with Rebecca's writing. She's very true to the characters I thought.

I agree, I think Rebecca did a great job with this episode, I thought it was very well written with lovely attention to detail that made it feel authentic. It had a generally lighthearted feel, even though it dealt with some serious issues such as child abuse, bullying and drugs in schools. I felt sad about the murder of McTierney who seemed to be a genuinely good man who was trying to make a difference.

My favourite scene was in the Principal’s office, hilarious with Simon’s brilliant facial expressions and body language, and ‘pervy perv perv’ made me laugh out loud. I loved the fencing scene - how graceful Patrick looked, and also the performance on stage where he seemed to be really enjoying himself, I loved the way he kept dodging out from behind the other guy. And the classic Patrick behaviour where he pinched that poor kid’s paper bag and banged it. I thought the ending was wonderful, showing the team as friends and then Patrick’s changing emotions and Lisbon’s concern for him.

Like Justlook3 I was surprised not to see Summer because of the Press Release which said ‘Cho and Summer hide their relationship from Lisbon’. I don’t suppose we’ll ever know if this was a mistake by CBS or if those scenes were cut because they made the episode too long. Although maybe we’ll see that covered in a later episode.

This last episode was amazing and I can't wait until the next episode. Jane and Van Pelt on Jane' couch was adorable and loved the scene of Jane calling the principal a "pervy, peeve." I thought it was a genuinely cute episode, but also a serious episode that deals with issues a lot of people go through. I'm so excited for the season finale and love that they've been renewed. Love Simon Baker and the whole cast. cool

4.21 Ruby Slippers
This episode was very well written, cast, directed, acted, fun to watch and intriguing. Even with suspects in custody I thought it may have been a suicide but didn't see the ending coming, thanks also to a strong performance by the actor who played Glennda. Loved the scene with him and Lisbon in the hallway: 'dressing to...', 'being escorted by...'.
Enjoyed seeing more of Cho investigating. For now him and Summer are still together. His pointing out to her that they could openly be boyfriend/girlfriend if she stopped being his CI, and her saying she needed the job, reminded me of why van Pelt broke up with Rigsby. Summer seems very impulsive, hope she resisted getting a dog. Jane was quite compassionate with the drag queens, he seemed very pensive at the end, said he wished he could be taught to accept who he is.
The dialogue was written very well with lots of word plays, and what was happening expressed through choice of words, so that one needs to pay attention to get that. Another great episode dealing with real-life issues, which is what I appreciate about this show!

4.21 "Ruby Slippers" was a wonderful episode with truly unique and amazing supporting characters- the drag group was so GREAT, I want to cuddle them all. The relationship between Jane and Lisbon is exactly as it's been all season: he wants to make her feel better, confides in her, trusts her to do the "right" thing (even if it means bending the rules a little). I belong to the people who actually like that she sometimes looks the other way these days: it's just fiction, and Lisbon has become a lot more human and likeable over those four seasons.
All in all, this episode triggered the following revelations for me:
1) Patrick Jane is an utterly, exceedingly, absolutely and really sweet guy- I always knew that, of course, but this episode showcased it very nicely.
2) I was thinking about NOT really watching the finale episode, but just reading the spoilers and watching some clips- because I know it will absolutely break my heart. This ep. changed my mind about that: I will watch every single episode, and if it kills me, I will have died honorably for MY SHOW!!!!! It will be worth it, dammit!
3) There's no way it won't be awkward and painful for me to watch Jane kiss a girl who is not Lisbon- let's face it, I'm a shipper, who am I kidding here. Sorry, Emmanuelle, you seem like a nice gal, but you're only second choice. I'm not sweet Loralei's enemy- but when he kisses her, I'm fully prepared to flinch. You want to change my mind about that, Master Heller? PROCEED, please!!!

4.21 Ruby Slippers
Just finished watching this episode - I really enjoyed it. It dealt with some difficult subjects - the drag queens in a very neutral non judgemental way. Simon as ever was superb. The way PJ accepted the drag queens for who they were but was still willing to push them like he does with any other suspect and not treat them differently - it was well written and skilfully acted. I too did not see the end coming. My teenage daughter was squirming big time but that's because it was all beyond her as yet more limited view of the world! Robin too was displaying a whole range of emotions and certainly appears more human and real these days. Oh and Cho smiled!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Summer seems to be getting nicer and much less tarty - not sure how she can still be a CI though if she changes her image. It is an interesting side play. Rigsby was much more how you would expect a guy to react to drag queens - like he didn't know what to say, where to look - huge contrast to PJ.
As Geli says a great episode dealing with real life issues - enjoy!

It was an interesting episode, and Jane, being a Carnie himself, understanding the queens was good form. I think Lisbon is getting a bit too mellow, remember she is the boss of her unit and not hiding her frustration in front of suspects, and blustering at a dilemna is a far cry from the Lisbon we first met in season one, she was a real bad-a..cop and not allowing Jane so much dancing space. She is too good a cop to let him control the situation. That is just my opinion of course. The dynamics between them has changed and soon she will even allow him to have a gun. Whew, that is some bat crazy day ahead.

I agree that Lisbon getting flustered in front of all those lawyers seemed a bit out of character. But then again everyone has their bad days. I'm going to chalk it up as just having a bad day. Because beyond that moment, she seems to have handled things well.
Other than that, the story was very well handled and written. Jane and Lisbon's disgust with those men for what they did to Archie was very real. As was Cho's confrontation with the lover and Grace's horror at the video. Even though I'm sure that Jane knew the boy wasn't dead, his disgust and anger at the men who drove the boy to suicide (as Archie said, he had planned to kill himself, but had been taken in by the "girls") was very very real. I think that was the standout moment of the whole episode in terms of acting. Baker showed barely contained fury as he waved that photo around. Tunney also did a great job as she switched Lisbon from being annoyed at Jane, to being horrified by the truth to being just as angry at those men.
The tiny subplot with Summer was adorable and though it seemed a little out of place at the end, I think we all needed a puppy related giggle as the case was just getting more and more depressing and horrible.
I shed a tear a couple of times during the episode and that's not easy to do. I'm glad Archie really didn't die and that those men were going away for other crimes. And I'm glad Lisbon chose to turn the other cheek. In this case, what good would it do to charge them with stealing a dead body and setting the car on fire?
Interesting comment on Patrick wishing someone had taught him to accept who he is. That actually seemed genuine, it's always hard to tell with him. [It seems like the only people he is genuine with are children, Lisbon (most of the time) and the team (on occasion)] Maybe if someone had, some of the mistakes of his past might not have come back to haunt him.

I agree this was a fabulous episode. I was a little taken aback by Lisbon's discomfort but I like the "bad day" theory. It is just me or does it seem like Jane is not quite as mentally "there" in cases as he once was? Could be since we know some of what's coming up in the finale, I'm reading more into it than I should. Anyway, I enjoyed the topic being handled the way it was as it brings humanity and not so much "cop" to the team. The song at the end was great---making Lisbon (and me) cry.

I loved this episode. No wonder the poor kid wanted to kill himself. Bullied by everybody for being different. I'd kinda guessed that he wasn't dead but it didn't spoil a thing, and I agree when PJ started pointing the photo at everybody in the line up and really having a go at them was superb. I suspect that lisbon doesnt like lawyers much, most of the time she treats them as an annoyance more than anything else and to be stuck with three of them all at once.
The final scene where PJ takes Lisbon to the show to "cheer" her up was a fitting finale to the episode, to see lisbon with a tear in her eye just proved that shes not robocop after all. cant wait for the box set to come out and then season 5

ps it had me blubbering like a baby as well biggrin

I agree with all of you:this was really a great episode! The story was well written and Jane was beatiful, especially in all the dialogues with Glennda. The finale scene was very sweet: Jane and Lisbon are getting closer and I'm afraid of what will happen in the season finale!

I loved the episode but I thought something was missing. I can't quite put my finger on it...it's just a feeling that the energy level was below par. For instance: Jane was "supposedly" rattled when he heard noises coming from behind the dumpster. "you scared the hell out of me Cho" but he hardly flinched... that was really odd.

Okay, so Ruby Slippers, just about broke my heart, it the beswt way possible. The whole "pheonix" thing was just so beautiful... and Lisbon's reaction? Priceless. It was like episode 3x14 where Lisbon let the girl go b/c she identified with her :')

btw I will find a place on this site to ask questions about Lisbon's character and digging into what we know... I haven't found the plave yet though...

Hi, I'm Tina and this is my first post. But I try to be more active from now on.
I liked episode 21 okay, but it wasn't the real "big episode" for me, I'm really not into the "men dress up like women" thing. I liked 20 much better. But I also didn't expect too much of the episode, since the finale is coming up and I guess the final 2 will be VERY good (at least I hope). Simon is my absolutely No. 1 actor and I just LOVE The Mentalist. Can't get enough of this show and I just hope it goes on for a very long time. I'm from Germany, but I'm in the lucky position that I can watch the episodes 1 or 2 days after they air in the US thanks to itunes.

Fran, keep up this wonderful work on this site, I come to the news section every day, it's the first thing I do in the morning :-)
Simon and this show mean SO much to me!

Tina
